Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic Semi-final of Italian Open 2012

It was the moment he had to stand up and prove why he is world No. 1.

Novak Djokovic did just that Saturday in the semifinals of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico by beating Roger Federer 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a stirring encounter that almost turned into a classic toward the end of a thrilling second set.

On Sunday, Djokovic will play the man he beat in the final last year, Rafael Nadal, after the Spaniard’s straight-set win over countryman David Ferrer earlier in the day.

But it was Federer who posed the first significant threat. Despite the fact that Djokovic has won the only intervening Grand Slam in Australia, it is Federer who has been the most consistently successful player on the tour since the US Open — where, memorably, Federer failed to clinch match point against the Serb in the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Federer had usurped Nadal’s place as No. 2 in the ATP Tour rankings the week before by winning the title in Madrid on that controversial blue clay — a surface Djokovic and Nadal scorned as unplayable, as both failed to reach the semis.
So there was everything to play for as far as Djokovic was concerned — pride, probably, as much as anything else. And he did not fail. Displaying all the qualities that saw him rise to No. 1 last year, Djokovic played a nearly faultless first set, feeding off Federer’s mistakes and forcing error after error whenever rallies lengthened into more than 10 strokes.

The match seemed over when Djokovic stepped up to serve at 5-4 in the second, especially when he moved to 30-0. But the capacity crowd, which had favored the Swiss legend all night, was not about to give up and kept cheering their man. Djokovic netted a forehand and hit the next shot wide. But Federer erred and it was match point.
Federer responded by hitting a terrific forehand that clipped the line. Then two long rallies developed and, in contrast to everything that had gone before, Federer won them both as the Serb hit long on the stretch each time.

The place was a cauldron of excitement by then, and Federer, looking as calm as ever, held easily to force a tiebreaker. Amazingly, he had won 15 out of the previous 19 points. This sudden reversal of fortune would have unnerved a lot of players, but not Djokovic. He led all through the tiebreaker after Federer was forced into netting a forehand after another fantastic rally on the first point, and Djokovic clinched it 7-4.

“I knew Roger had been on an incredible streak, winning on that blue clay in Madrid which was difficult for all of us,” Djokovic said afterward in a courtside interview. “So I knew I would have to be at my best. And, in the end, I played really good. Now, I have to concentrate on Rafa, the player I have played most in my career, I think. But I am feeling good, so I have big hopes.”

So, now the big question is ::

Will Roger federer play at BNL d'Italia - Italian Open 2012, Rome ATP 1000 masters ---

Some of my sources are telling me ::

That Roger Federer has reached Rome today morning.

RF will resume practice tomorrow morning.

Thou, I am 99% sure that he will play at Italian Open, 2012 (as per my sources)....

As soon as any contrary info is out, we will let you know.

Will Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal get No. 2 seeding at French Open 2012 after Italian Open 2012

First of all, a huge round of congrats to Roger Federer for winning his 20th Masters tournament just a few minutes back.

In a nerve jangling final, Roger Federer defeated Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 to win his 3rd Madrid Open.

Also, now he is the first man in the history to have won a same title on three different surfaces as he won in 2007 on Hard court when it was played in Hamburg, then in 2009 on Red clay in Madrid and now in 2012 on Blue Clay.

With this title, in the rankings that will be declared in about 5 hours time from now, Roger Federer will regain No. 2 from Rafael Nadal.

Now, the biggest question in every one's mind is,

a) Can Roger Federer retain his No. 2 world ranking after Italian Open, 2012?

  Will Roger Federer be seeded no. 2 for the French Open, 2012?

Well, as the seedings of French Open, 2012 will be made after Italian Open, 2012, so, in this post, I will be discussing the various scenarios in which Roger Federer will remain world No. 2 after Italian Open, 2012 or can Rafael nadal some how get back the No. 2 Ranking back after Italian Open.

As I explained above, the following are the points of the Top 4, that ATP will announce in a few hours time.

1. Novak Djokovic : almost 11,200 points

2. Roger Federer : 9430 points

3. Rafael Nadal :: 9105 points.

4.   Andy Murray : 7490 points

So, as you can see, Roger Federer will be ahead by 330 points from Rafael Nadal in the to be announced ATP rankings.

One more small clarification, the Winner of ATP 1000 title gets 1000 points, the losing finalist gets 600 points, the losing semi finalists get 360 points, the losing Quarter Finalists get 180 points, the 4th round losers 90 points, the 3rd round loser gets 45 points & the 2nd round loser gets 10 points.

Now, let us start discussing the various scenarios that will help Roger Federer to retain ATP World No. 2 ranking after Italian Open, 2012 & thus get the No. 2 seeding for French Open, 2012.

1) If by chance, Roger Federer loses out in the 3rd round & Rafael Nadal loses out in the semi final of Italian open, 2012, then also Roger Federer will be ahead by 5 points & thus will get the No. 2 seeding for French open, 2012.

Same scenario if RF loses in the 3rd, 4th or QF, as you very well can understand.

2)  If Roger Federer loses out in the semi final of Italian Open, 2012 & Rafael Nadal loses in the finals of Italian Open, 2012, then also Roger Federer will be ahead by 85 points & thus will get the No. 2 seeding for French open, 2012.

Of Course, with these two scenarios, you can get a fair picture of other possible mini scenarios.

Now, these are the different scenarios that will help Rafael Nadal to regain ATP World No. 2 ranking after Italian Open, 2012 & thus get the No. 2 seeding for French Open, 2012 :

1) If by chance, Roger Federer loses out in the 2nd round & Rafael Nadal loses out in the semi final of Italian open, 2012, then Rafael Nadal will get ahead by 25 points & thus will regain the ATP World No. 2 ranking back & the No. 2 seeding for French open, 2012.

But, as I explained above this condition is only true for RF losing up to 2nd Round.

2) If Roger Federer loses out in the semi final of Italian Open, 2012 & Rafael Nadal wins the finals of Italian Open, 2012, then Rafael Nadal will get ahead by 75 points & thus will regain the ATP World No. 2 ranking back & the No. 2 seeding for French open, 2012..

So, the 100% sure shot condition in which Roger Federer will retain No. 2 Ranking or Rafael Nadal will regain No. 2 ATP ranking is by winning the Italian Open, 2012 & thus, will ensure that they get No. 2 seeding for French Open, 2012 as well.

How is the Red Clay court surface at Italian Open 2012 likely to Play ::::

----- The Italian Open Clay court surface will be much-2 slower than Madrid or Roland Garros.

------------------------------ The ball is expected to bounce higher than on any other surface.

------- This will mean that baseline players will dominate because they have so much time to get to each ball and because the ball bounces higher they rarely have to hit a ball anywhere but in their "strike zone," or the area between their knees and shoulders.

So, in a nutshell, the Clay court at Italian Open will be much much slower than in madrid open & will be beneficial to clay court specialist & the base liners.

Third seed Roger Federer eased past Spain's David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Madrid Masters semifinals on Friday.

He will face Janko Tipsarevic, who knocked out world number one Novak Djokovic, for a place in Sunday's final.

Federer was unwilling to get dragged into the controversy over the court conditions.

"If you want to be a good clay court player, you must be able to play everywhere," said Federer.

"Madrid has taken a gamble with blue clay. It's always a little different here because of the altitude and we must sit down with the other players to discuss it.

"It is slippy, there's no doubt about that but that has been the case here for a few years. They haven't yet found the perfect balance. Our job each day is to adapt to the conditions that we face."

Federer now stands 26-3 on the season, playing for the first time after a six-week break.

Roger Federer beats Milos Raonic at Madrid Open!

Roger Federer survived an early scare before beating Milos Raonic 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) at the Madrid Open on Wednesday.

Federer hasn't been eliminated in the second round of a tournament since the 2010 Rome Masters, and the 16-time Grand Slam champion had to call on his wealth of experience and shotmaking abilities to survive an early scare against the 23rd-ranked Canadian.

Federer, who was stretched to three sets in winning their only other meeting at Indian Wells earlier this season, recalled a past era when describing a fast-paced match full of power and passing shots.

Raonic did what he could against the Swiss star, firing 21 aces in a match that lasted two hours 13 minutes. But he also missed plenty of opportunities by converting just one of eight break point chances

"These are some of the fastest courts on tour, I expected that a few shots would decide the match, that's what it was like back in the days of (Pete) Sampras, (Boris) Becker and (Stefan) Edberg," Federer said. "That's the way it was tonight."

Raonic overpowered Federer's attempts to serve-and-volley early as he hit perfect passing shots whenever the Swiss star came forward. Raonic won 12 straight points to close out the first set, earning the decisive break in the ninth game.

Federer was on the back foot again to start the second, but the Swiss player's serve bailed him out repeatedly, helping him save all four break points he faced in the set.

"I thought I could take it to him by serving and volleying and it worked a bit," Federer said. "I definitely started to get a better read on his serve and to get into more baseline rallies, make him hit more shots on his own serve."

Federer secured the break he needed in the 11th game by stretching Raonic wide to send a shot into the net, and then clinched the set with a soft drop shot.

Both players held serve in the decider to force the tiebreaker, where Federer led 4-1 before a number of erratic shots from the Swiss player allowed Raonic to pull to 5-4.

But Raonic unleashed a wild forehand long to give Federer match point, and the third-ranked Swiss stroked a sublime crosscourt forehand to clinch the victory.

"I thought I played really well the whole time, I was doing what I wanted to do, I was dictating ... I just came up a bit short," said Raonic, who served 21 aces. "Tonight it comes down to one point. It's hard not to be disappointed."

In continuing with our quest for making every one understand the complicated ATP Points, I am writing this small post:

These were the ATP points as declared on April 30th, 2012

Now, These are the ATP Points as declared on May 7th, 2012 :

See, in these the points earned by players in Mutua Madrid Open, 2011 have been deducted in the ranking points as declared on May 7th, 2012.

As you all know, the points distribution of ATP 1000 event is as follows :

1000 pts for winner

600 points for losing finalist.

360 points for losing semi-finalist.

   So, accordingly the points have got deducted for each players. The difference if any, is due to the fact of adjustment of Davis Cup points.

First impression of Blue Clay at Mutua Madrid Open 2012 & 6 reasons why Roger Federer will do well

As one of my friends here in Madrid, was at Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario stadium no. 2, so here are a few insights that I got from her on how the Blue Clay court is playing:

According to her, the following are the characteristics of Blue Clay from a spectator point of view:

i) The ball viewing is surely looking better.

ii) Its easier for spectators to view the ball while sitting in the stadium.

iii) The TV viewers are also endorsing the same views.

iv) The Blue Clay courts are surely looking much better & a delight to eyes.

v) The usual dust & sand at Red clay is not flying every where.

How ever, the flip side of Blue Clay:

i) The courts are too slippery.

ii) The players are finding it too hard to approach net especially while chasing down a drop shot.

iii) The usual mark of ball that gets embedded on red clay isn't leaving much impression, so without Hawk Eye, there are bound to be some controversies for sure.

Why Blue Clay should support Roger Federer

i) The court is looking like an ideal Hard court at the moment.

ii) It is looking ideal for drop shot makers as ball is holding on & even fast runners like Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal will find it difficult to chase down drop shots.

iii) The back hand slice shots are holding on to surface & that will surely suit Roger Federer the most.

iv) The court is so slippery that those clay court players will find it so difficult to chase down balls.

v) Plus, the bounce is looking even.

vi) Even, the shots on backhand shouldn't bounce too much,

so, actually I have more than 6 reasons to believe Roger Federer should do well at Mutua Madrid Open, 2012.

Roger Federer says he's recharged after break

Roger Federer is ready to challenge Novak Djokovic for the No. 1 ranking after a monthlong break from tennis.

The third-ranked Federer returns this week at the Madrid Open, a tournament he won in 2006 and 2009.

''I am excited to be back after a long offseason, but I needed it after playing so, so much,'' Federer said Sunday. ''I have put myself in a good position if I do win a Grand Slam for the world number one.''

''I know how hard it is to win (a major championship). But it is a dream for me to achieve it this year. I will chase it as hard as possible.''

To reclaim the top ranking, Federer will have to overtake Djokovic and No. 2 Rafael Nadal, the top two seeded players in Madrid. Nadal is playing excellent tennis with back-to-back wins at Monte Carlo, where he broke a string of defeats to Djokovic, and most recently at Barcelona.

''Rafa having lost so many times to Novak, it is interesting to see how (Djokovic) will react now,'' Federer said. ''Both are great clay-court players.''

The 30-year-old Swiss called Nadal the tournament favorite. He also withheld judgment on the event's new blue clay surface that the Spaniard clay-court specialist has criticized as a departure from tennis tradition.

''It feels a bit different from regular clay. I don't know if it is the visual or just the feel of it. It has been somewhat cold and rainy, so we'll have to see how it plays when it is hot,'' Federer said. ''I haven't had a chance to play on center-court yet, so I'll have to wait until a proper match to give you my opinion.''

Roger Federer fresh for clay swing after much-needed break

In fine fettle after a month-long rest, Roger Federer is ready to get his clay season underway and continue his bid to recapture the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic.

The 30-year-old Swiss maestro has not played since losing to Andy Roddick at the Sony Ericsson Open at the end of March. He said he needed some time away from tennis to recharge his batteries and rid himself of one or two niggling injuries.
Federer has played some of his best tennis in years in winning three titles this year, including the Indian Wells Masters event, but knows that challenging Rafa Nadal on the Spaniard's favoured clay and stealing his French Open crown in Paris starting at the end of this month will be a tall order.

"I feel good about my chances of playing well in the next few months," the world number three told a news conference at the Madrid Open on Sunday.

"But then again I am coming back on clay and Rafa has been so dominant on this surface for so many years so I know the task ahead of me," added the 16-times grand slam singles champion.

Federer said he had needed time out after an intense start to the year when he played 23 matches and lost just three, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open before falling to Nadal. He won events in Rotterdam and Dubai to add to his success in Indian Wells.

He also had a busy end to 2011, triumphing at the World Tour finals in London in November after victories at the Paris Masters and his home event in Basel.

BIG GOALS

The rest was vital, said Federer.

"I needed it because I did play so, so much and this break was also looking ahead to what's to come and there's a lot on my plate and want to be fresh in my mind and fit in my body for those big goals ahead," he added.

"It was more about relaxing my body because I had been playing with some niggling injuries over a few weeks, or a few months almost, and I am happy they went away.

"It was just to get away from tennis for a while really, get away from the craziness that surrounds it, the matches and the press and all that stuff.

"So that was nice to just recharge the batteries, that was the key during this break."

If Federer can leapfrog number two Nadal and topple Djokovic he would equal Pete Sampras's record of 286 weeks at the top of the rankings and the Swiss said he was in a "pretty good position" to do it over the coming months.

"All of a sudden if you do win a grand slam again you have a shot and if I do I'll probably be extremely close to world number one," he said.

"Then again - easier said than done. I know what it takes to win a grand slam. It's hard, it's always been hard.
"It's still far away for me and my focus is on my next match here on Wednesday.

"But it is a dream for me this year try to achieve that again. I'll try to chase that as hard as I can and see if it's possible. If not it's no problem and I'll just try to win tournaments which is a thrill in itself."

Federer, who has a bye into the second round, begins his Madrid Open campaign on Wednesday against the winner of the first-round match between fast-rising Canadian Milos Raonic and former world number three David Nalbandian of Argentina.

This Sunday in a press conference held in the Caja Mágica, Roger Federer spoke about his first impressions of the Mutua Madrid Open’s blue clay courts after two days of training on them. The world number 3 talked about how he was adapting to the new surface. “It feels a little different than regular clay. I’m not sure if it’s just visually or something else. It has been rainy and cooler than usual, so that makes a difference too. It’s going to be interesting to see how it’s going to play when there is hot weather”.

The 30-year-old assured the press that in terms of fitness he has left his niggling injuries behind. “I was playing with some lingering injuries for a few months, so I am happy that they are now gone”. After taking a break from the circuit after the Miami ATP Masters 1000 (where he lost in the third round to Andy Roddick), the Basel native spoke about his return to the courts: “I feel good. I am returning to clay in Rafa’s country, on a surface in which he has been dominant for so many years. My focus now is on making sure I get through here. I am happy to be here and am really excited to be playing again. This was a longer break than usual but I needed it because I had played so much”.

These are the ATP points as last declared on April 30th, 2012

So, now, as you can see after the triumph of Rafael Nadal at Barcelona Open, 2012, still the point difference between these two legends is 1290 points.

Since Roger Federer has to retain 360 points at Madrid Open by virtue of being semi-finalist in 2011 & 45 points at Rome (Italian Open) as he lost in 3rd Round in Italian Open, 2011.

While Rafael Nadal has to retain 1200 points more as he was the finalist at both Madrid Open & Italian open in 2012.

Now, these are these are the permutations & combination that can make Roger Federer regain no. 2 ATP Ranking immediately after the Italian Open, 2012 :::::

i) RF needs to reach the finals of both Madrid Open & Italian Open to have any mathematical chance of reaching #2.

ii) Roger needs to win at least one of these two ATP 1000 masters & yes,as I explained above, reaching finals in both is very crucial.

(Thou, RF will gain about 960 points if he wins the Italian Open. If he wins Madrid Open, he gains 640 points more to his overall tally of points).

iii) If Roger Federer only manages to win only 1 out of these two & of course, reaches Final of the other, then for Roger Federer to reach no.2, Rafael Nadal needs to lose in at least one of the two semi finals & the final of other. In a nutshell, I mean to say, if Rafa wins any one of these two, then Roger will have no chance of reaching no.2 before Roland Garros, 2012.

That way if RF wins Madrid open, 2012, Roger Federer will gain 640 points if he wins Madrid Open &

RF reaches final of Italian Open, 2012, RF will gain 560 points more for reaching Italian Open 2012 final, which means an increment of 1200 points.

If Rafael Nadal loses in one of these semi finals, that will mean, he will lose out 240 points.

Thus, Roger will have a difference of 1440 points & thus will be ahead by 150 points from Rafael Nadal after Italian Open, 2012.

So, the only 100% sure condition in which Roger Federer regains No. 2 ATP ranking is when he wins both of Madrid Open & Italian open 2012, as he will gain 1600 points, even if Rafael Nadal reaches final of both.

Just in case, Roger Federer reaches final of both & loses both finals & Rafael Nadal loses in the semi final of both, in that cases Roger Federer will gain 800 points while Rafa will lose about 480 points,

In that case, Rafael Nadal will still be ahead by 10 points after Italian Open, 2012.

So, as you can see this battle for No. 2 is heating up & too bad for me as I will be missing out both Madrid & Rome because of my travel plans.

This interview with Roger was taken by  Andreas W. Schmid in Feusiberg, Switzerland and it was printed in the „Basler Zeitung“.

Roger invited a handful journalists to Feusisberg. At the beginning all of them asked questions together.
After that, the journalists got to sit together with Roger alone to ask their own questions.
So here is the FULL interview with Andreas W. Schmid. I translated it from german to english and wrote everything myself. Please bear with my english

Q: Roger Federer, you have calluses on your hands…

Roger Federer: … so what?

Q: Well, Having calluses comes from working .. and we thought, everything just seems so easy for you.

Roger Federer: Precisely not. This is real callus and doesn’t just come from nothing, but from hard practice.

Q: We feel reassured. A lot is coming up, so  that a good preparation can be deciding.

Roger Federer : Yes, big moments are waiting for us Tennis players. That is why I am very motivated during practice. And I’m looking forward to the matches. Also because the past six month have been very good.

Q: Which one of the four big events is the most important one for you?

Roger Federer: Difficult to say. Wimbledon remains the ultimate, also because my idols – Sampras, Edberg and Becker, triumphed a dozen times. I won the juniors tournament in Wimbledon, have beaten Sampras. Those were special successes. And just right there it’s where the Olympic Final takes place four weeks later. That is an exeptional luck for our generation. But of course the French Open and the US Open are also important. If I think about it, I have to say: Tennis is a privileged sport. In other sports athletes have to wait months or even years, until they have another highlight again. For us, one highlight chases the other.

Q: If you could pick – would you choose the victory at the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon or the Olympic victory at Wimbledon?

Roger Federer: For me, there is no difference. It’s clear that more people will be seing you, during the Olympic Games. Plus you don’t only win for yourself, but also for Switzerland. Of course it’s special, that the Olympic Games only take place every four years. If you can’t win, you have to wait pretty long, before you get another chance again.

Q: If you come away empty-handed from the Olympic  Games you would have to wait until 2016. Will you still be around by then?

Roger Federer: I didn’t really think about it much yet. But It's not unthinkable that I play in Rio.

Q: Your next tournament is Madrid on blue sand. What do you think about it ?

Roger Federer : I am against the blue sand, because Rafael Nadal is against it. I support him, if he says, that this is against the tradition of a clay tournament. At the end, so Rafael’s worry, we play on all the colours, on blue sand,  on green sand, on black sand. A real clay tournament is played on red subsurface. On the other hand, I do understand that they try to make something new from time to time to get attention. Just how Ion Tiriac is doing it in Madrid. But clearly, the sand has to be perfect, or it will be a debacle.

Q: During the past month you have had some differences of opinion with Rafael Nadal. For example because of the tournament schedule, which he thinks is too full. Is this an admission to Rafael Nadal now, since you are supporting him during the argument of the blue sand colour?

Roger Federer: No, that doesn’t have something to do with that. The blue sand is a topic since about a year now. So, even before the differences we had about some topics. Sometimes we have the same opinion and sometimes we don’t.

Q : Doesn’t that have an influence on your friendship ?

Roger Federer: Not for me. I think it’s too bad, that he steps down early as players council vice president. I would like to see him during the meetings and know his opinion about a topic. On the other hand, I do understand him. If you can’t make it with all your heart, it’s better to step down from this task. I don’t know for how long I will remain president of the players council. It is much more time-consuming  than people think.

Q : You haven’t only been criticized by Rafael Nadal, but also other players. Some players said, that you are too diplomatic and too much Swiss.

Roger Federer : Important is, that not all of us have the same opinion. But they also need a resting pol. That doesn’t mean that I don’t share my opinion. I want to share my part, so that Tennis can advance. But if I do denounce, I do it open and fairly and not behind their backs and by talking „dirty“ tot he media. That is contra-productive. Then sports falls back and an incredible 7:5 in the fifth set counts much less than a polemical message. Thereby it’s the tennis ball that should be in the center of attention and not any political stuff. That has broken the NHL and same with the NBA.  That is why I do hope, that there will be no boycott.

Q: In relation with the discussion if the tournament calender is overloaded or not, other players do say: Federer is in a good position, he doesn’t have any signs of exhaustion.

Roger Federer: Well, people see that completely wrong. It’s not that I do have a magical body, that is never injured. I played injured several times. But I do listen to my body. I also take my freedom to take some weeks off if I do feel tired. Sometimes the others don’t know  when it is enough  and prefer it to collect the startmoney at a tournament instead to cancelt he event. My plans on the other hand have always been longterm and not only fort he upcoming tournaments. That is why they have to check for themselves. Whereas there can be unfortunate injuries, where they can’t blame themselves.

Q: Where does it hurt you lightly?

Roger Federer : That it hurts lightly sometimes is normal. I am a pro athlete since almost 20 years now. If I wouldn’t feel some signs of exhautions sometimes, that wouldn’t be normal. Where it is exactly, I can’t really tell. Once here, once there. But I hardly do have muscle ache. I’m grown up and know what my body can take or not.

Q: Have you watched the Monte Carlo Final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal?

Roger Federer: No, if I am not playing the tournament I don’t watch at all. Nadal is clearly the man to beat on clay. Okay, Djokovic also played incredible on sand last year. I don’t know, what was up with him in Monte Carlo. I just know, that Nadal can run you down on sand if you are not on your highest level. To win Monte Carlo eight times in a row is an incredible series.

Q : It is going to be difficult for you to break that record…

Roger Federer : (laughing) Seems like. I don’t know, how that could be still possible.

Q: Lets look ahead to the Olympic Games: Are you going to be the flag bearer for the third time? Or will you leave this honor up to Fabian Cancellara?

Roger Federer : I will support every decicion. Of course, I would love to do it, because it is a big honor. Those were special moments in my carrer. It was my birthday in Peking, exactly 8.8.08. It was also special in Athens. If Fabio Cancellara is going to be the one in London, I would be happy for him.  He is a good and dear guy with incredible results.

Q: Cancellara fell into a deep hole after the 2008 Olympics. Did something like that happen to you as well ?

Roger Federer: No. I think we have an advance in Tennis for that. Because we have so many highlights. Also, you can’t afford it to race if you don’t have your full strenght. For Tennis, where you have about 80 matches a year you can go there and see how it goes.

Q : Books about you are booming. In a book called « Fascination Federer » the author Dominique Eigenmann writes that he loves you. Doesn’t Mirka get jealouse about things like that ?

Roger Federer : No, no. With those kind of love declarations she can live very well. (laughing)

Q: You haven’t written any autobiography yet. Why not?

Roger Federer: I don’t feel like revealing everything.

Q: What chapter would be the most interesting?

Roger Federer: From my view, nothing is really exciting, even if I have a remarkable carrer. I know all about myself. For my fans, the most thrilling chapter would be to know how it all works behind the scenes.

Q: Your kids will shortly be three years old. In two years they will start Kindergarden. Where will they do that?

Roger Federer: We will see. One thing for sure, I will see them less, if I will continue playing Tennis. If I do still wanna play Tennis then, we will see.

Q: Will you move to Herrliberg?

Roger Federer: I bought land there, it is actually an option. But if and when we will beginn to build, we don’t know yet.

Q: Is it possible that you move to Basel or Basel area ?

Roger Federer : I can see myself having an appartement at the Rhein. But I haven’t given it a thought yet. First of all I’m looking forward to the Chalets, which we are building in Lenzerheide right now.

Q: Since you are successful, the newspaper in the nordwest Swiss always discuss about it on wheter  you are from Basel city or from Basel area. Please do tell us, so we can write it correctly in the future.

Roger Federer : What are you writing right now?

Q: Roger Federer – from Basel area.

Roger Federer: I was born in Basel  city hospital. If you consider that, both is correct.

Q : You might think so, but not the Basel city people or the Basel area people. They wanna know now.

Roger Federer : I don’t wanna start a fight. And for somebody like me, who travels so much Basel City and Basel area are one region, even, if there are differences. You can be reassured: No matter if you write Federer from Basel city, or Federer from Basel area, both is correct.

Q: A typical diplomatic answer from a Swiss.

Roger Federer : I am Swiss … and from Basel City … and from Basel area…
