After the Indian Wells 2013 Ladies Singles Draw, got released a few hours back (if you are yet to see the Draw, you can see it by clicking Here), many people messaged me to ask why are the Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) not playing in Indian Wells, 2013?

Well, firstly let me clarify that the current WTA World No. 1 Serena Williams and her elder Venus Williams are fully fit & fine.

Just for every one's information, this will be 12th year in running when Williams sisters won't be playing at Indian Wells. Or in precise words, both Serena and Venus Williams have been boycotting Indian Wells since 2001.

The last time Venus and Serena played in Indian Wells, California was way back in 2001. In 2001 edition of Indian Wells, Serena and Venus Williams were scheduled to play each other on 17th March, 2001 in the semi-finals but Venus Williams pulled out of her semifinal match against Serena, citing knee tendinitis. The crowd booed the whole family immediately after the story of Venus Williams withdrawing from the match came out.

Even, when Serena Williams came to play her final match vs Kim Clijsters on 18th March, 2001, she and the whole family was booed very badly.

"It's the worst act of prejudice I've seen since they killed Martin Luther King," Richard Williams said in an interview after the final match. He said that as he and Venus were walking to their seats for the final, about a dozen fans used the racial slur and one spoke of skinning him alive.

Williams said he resisted a temptation to respond. Instead, he said, he watched near tears as fans jeered Serena and cheered when she double-faulted en route to a victory against Kim Clijsters. He characterized the crowd as white and wealthy, with all but about a thousand fans in the crowd of 16,000 booing his daughter.

"That's the hardest time in the world I've ever had," Williams said. "I'll never go to Indian Wells again, because I believe that guy would skin me alive."

Thou, Serena Williams inspite of all this Booing controversy played an amazing match and defeated Kim Clijsters 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 & It was Williams' 2nd title of the year and the 19th of her career. It was her 1st Tier I title of the year and her 2nd overall.

Here is the video of Richard Williams and Venus Williams getting booed as they were coming to the players box before the start of the final match ----

& here is the highlights from the final match of Indian Wells 2001 between Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters

Here is an emotional picture of Serena Williams hugging her dad Richard Williams after beating Clijsters in the finals of Indian Wells 2001

serena hugsssssssssssssssss.jpg

Since that day, Serena and Venus Williams have never played again in Indian Wells and this year is no exception. Here's hoping that hopefully, Serena and Venus will play there next year as I am sure, the fans there will love seeing Williams sisters in action.

PS: Please be informed that this post by me is neither endorsing Richard Williams views about the crowd booing because of racist reasons, nor I am trying to justify that the crowd did it as they felt that Richard Williams had fixed the match.

Also, be informed that I am a very-2 big fan of Serena and Venus and at the same time, I love Indian Wells and feel its the best non grand slam tournament.....

Thanks Kris, the crowd doesn't have mercy... But it's too much, 12 years of not playing at Indian Wells because of this reason!!!

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a Roger Federer to smile.

Thanks Kishore :)

I am glad they are not playing there. People need to understand that Black people are overly tired of people at large saying we play the race card too much. You can't understand it if you have never been in a Black person's shoes. These girls don't need the money and they are not forced to play where they do not want to play so my hat is off to them. They are setting a good example and I wish more black people would do the same. Then just then maybe Black folk would stop being marginalized, undervalued and underestimated.

Because of a couple people saying some racist things the sisters won't play.. I think it's reverse racism and if they won't play then it shows how unprofessional they are...

The hate that the Williams sister had to feel should have never taken place,. They should never play there again because the pain and hurt that they went through can never be erased..you did reach out then, the damage has been done.,good luck sisters.

This is one of my favorite tournaments to watch because the Williams sisters do not play it.  Nice to know year after year we won't have to endure the drama queen Serena or Venus' disgusting outfits.  Everything about these girls revolves around making themselves the center of attention, usually through terribly unsportsmanlike behavior.  They are great tennis players - too bad they have never been able to let their tennis do the talking without all the extraneous crap that make them unbearable.

THE CROWD WAS NEVER CORRECTED, THE TENNIS AUTHOITY OF INDIEN WELLS SHOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING, LIKE THEY DO IN FOOT BALL, ALL AROUND THE WORLD. BUT NOTHING WAS DONE. LIVE WENT ON AS USUAL WHILES THE WORLD WAS WATCHING. BOLDLY BOOING A BLACK FAMILY. EVEN AS CLOSE AS THEY WERE WALKING BY. PEOPLE SO CLOSE WERE BOOING. BUT GOD IS GREAT, SHE WON THE MATCH. ( don't want to say the word, but it's so hard not to say racism). ALWAYS THE CASE IN THE USA. HOPE THEY NEVER RETURN TO INDIAN WELLS. SHE WILL REGAIN THE POINTS IN NO TIME.

Indian Wells is in the center of a wealthy, white privileged area of horsey types and golf geeks.  Racist is putting it mildly. Land of golf courses surrounded by California Indian reservations wealthy with casino monies.  They don't like that the darker population have as much $$$$ as they do. Check out the history of how this area came to be...

A crowd of 16,000 people is NOT 'a couple of people'. And there are other things more important in life than 'professionalism' such as valuing your dignity as a person. Unless the tournament acknowledges that what happened was not right & offers some kind of apology, then I totally agree with their stance - stay away from Indian Wells sisters! Blessings.

Serena and Venus have a right to not play because of the treatment they received.  Nothing was done to stop the people from their behavior.  It just went on and on.  The sponsors could offer a huge sum of money ($15 million) as an apology to a charity of the Williams' choice to end racism that maybe they would be willing to come to the event,  It wouldn't erase the pain but might acknowledge the ownership and an action to try to do something about the reason they have made their personal statement to the event.  Larry E. could take a leadership position here and use this tournament to try to make a difference.  C.Davis
