Roger Federer showed his true class and his full repertoire of mind blowing shots as he defeated Italian Potito Starace 6-1, 6-2 in 51 minutes in the Round-2 of Italian Open, 2013.

Picture of Roger Federer in his new haircut. His new short haircut received a thumbs up from Majority of fans.

Roger Federer playing in his first match after last week's loss at Madrid Open to Kei Nishikori started off in grand fashion holding on to his opening game in 51 seconds.

With some blistering forehands, precise backhand shots, dropshots and a couple of unbelievable volleys, Federer broke Starace in the 4th & 6th game and then served out the first set after saving two break points to win the first set 6-1 in 19 minutes.

Federer then immediately broke Starace's service in the first game of the Second set. Federer then again broke the Italian's service in the 7th game and then comfortably held on to this service to win the set 6-2 and the match 6-1, 6-2.

Here are the overall match stats

As you can see from these stats, not only was Federer's service effective, but also, his high winners to unforced errors ratio showed that Federer is returning to form. Also, Federer was keen to come to the net and won 75% of his points.

Federer's next opponent (in Round-3) will be the winner of Giles Simon (who today defeated Volandri) vs Mikhail Youzhny (who defeated Tommy Haas in straight sets).

Am sitting here feeling happy and with a big smile after watching the way that Roger played today. Compared to his performance in Madrid, he has honed his serve and tightened up his game. The practice appearing to have paid off. Very encouraging to see and good that he is upbeat and pleased with the way he played.

As to the haircut. The lack of Federer curls came as a bit of a surprise. He looks good and that is the most important thing. Though if I had to choose, the curls would get my vote.

Though, Roger Federer played a good match, but its too early to jump to any conclusion & we shouldn't forget the opponent's rank is 281.

I would like to see how he plays against Gasquet in the QF & Murray or Tsonga in the semis before commenting on his form.

The signs look promising though. Vamos.

Kim makes a valid point.

However it was clear to see that the quality of Roger's game had improved compared to his performance in Madrid. I sincerely hope he can build on this as the tournament progresses and opponents become more testing. It was an encouraging start and I wish him the very best of luck :)
