Yesterday night it was announced that Maria Sharapova, World No.3, withdrew from US Open due to a right shoulder injury.

"Maria has informed us that she will be unable to compete at the US Open this year due to a right shoulder bursitis and has withdrawn from the tournament." said tournament director David Brewer. "We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to New York next year."

Sharapova, once a champion in New York, has been through numerous injuries throughout her career.

The four-time Grand Slam champion and holder of Career Grand Slam has not had a good hard court season to say the least. Having withdrawn from Carlsbad and Toronto tournaments due to a hip injury, the Russian has played only one hard court match. It was a second round encounter with World No.17 Sloane Stephens at Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, which she lost in three sets, 6:2 6:7(5) 3:6.

At last year's US Open Sharapova reached the semifinals. She was defeated by the runner-up to Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, in three sets.

Former World No.1 will lose 900 ranking points as she won't be able to defend her last year's semi-final run. Also, the withdrawal sees Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia becoming the last seed and every seed ranked below Maria moving up a spot.

I was shell-shocked to hear that Sharapova withdrew from USOpen. The last 10 days have been maddening for her. Axing Connors as her coach, then having Sugarapova as her surname (rumors) at US Open, now, withdrawing from US Open. Its tough being as famous as she is.
