The defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro retained his Swiss Indoors title by defeating the home favorite Roger Federer 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 in 2 hours & 20 minutes.
This was Roger Federer's 8th successive (overall 10th) final at Basel (Federer has 5 titles at Basel).
Roger Federer playing in his 113th career final (77 titles) had a great start to the match as his service looked very sharp in the opening 3 service games.
The first 7 games went on serve. Federer's service was looking much better than what it has through out 2013 & Del Potro too was serving exceedingly well. Also, the Swiss Maestro was trying to come to the net as often as possible & even used Chip & Charge on 2nd serve of Del Potro.
The Argentine had the first break in the 8th game to take a vital 5-3 lead. But, how ever, it was Vintage Federer as he broke back to love to make it 4-5 & bring the set back to serve.
On 4-5, Del potro had two set points (break points) but Roger Federer showed his true class as he saved saved the 1st with a booming ace & then saved the next in the longest rally of the match. Then went on to win the game, with a big booming ace & then will a powerful forehand shot to make it 5-all. Federer served three aces in that game & this was the first time in 2013 that he served 3 aces in one game.
This was a big indication & a message to all that Roger Federer is returning to his old form.
The set went in to the tie-breaker.
Del Potro had a great start to the tie-breaker winning the first 3 points, how ever, Federer won the next 2, but, how ever, the Argentine won the tie-breaker comfortably 7-3. The set lasted for 54 minutes.
Here are the Set-1 stats
Federer served 6 aces & his first serve % also was 60%, just that Del Potro played slightly better in the tie-breakers & 2 lucky net cords helped the Argentine win the first set tie-breaker
Vintage Roger Federer
The second set according to me was the best set that Roger Federer has played post Wimbledon, 2012.
Roger Federer broke Del Potro's service in the 2nd game of the 2nd set & this was the 25th time that Roger Federer broke his opponents service in the opening service game of the set. Roger Federer again broke the Argentine service in the 8th game to comfortably take the set 6-2 in 36 mins.
Here are the Set-2 stats
Federer 1st serve % improved to further 65% in the 2nd set & it was absolute vintage Federer in the 2nd set.
Del Potro broke Roger Federer's service in the very 1st game of the 3rd set after Roger Federer double faulted. Federer had two break points in the next game, but couldn't utilize those as the Argentine's served much better in the 3rd set.
After this Federer didn't get a chance to break the Argentine's serve as Del Potro served out the set 6-4 in 50 minutes.
The end score-line read 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 & overall match duration was 2 hours & 20 minutes.
Here are the overall match stats----
