The defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro retained his Swiss Indoors title by defeating the home favorite Roger Federer 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 in 2 hours & 20 minutes.

82827-G3syJSXTmjYkWT_nFi7zGA.jpg

This was Roger Federer's 8th successive (overall 10th) final at Basel (Federer has 5 titles at Basel).

1st set

Roger Federer playing in his 113th career final (77 titles) had a great start to the match as his service looked very sharp in the opening 3 service games.

The first 7 games went on serve. Federer's service was looking much better than what it has through out 2013 & Del Potro too was serving exceedingly well. Also, the Swiss Maestro was trying to come to the net as often as possible & even used Chip & Charge on 2nd serve of Del Potro.

The Argentine had the first break in the 8th game to take a vital 5-3 lead. But, how ever, it was Vintage Federer as he broke back to love to make it 4-5 & bring the set back to serve.

On 4-5, Del potro had two set points (break points) but Roger Federer showed his true class as he saved saved the 1st with a booming ace & then saved the next in the longest rally of the match. Then went on to win the game, with a big booming ace & then will a powerful forehand shot to make it 5-all. Federer served three aces in that game & this was the first time in 2013 that he served 3 aces in one game.

This was a big indication & a message to all that Roger Federer is returning to his old form.

The set went in to the tie-breaker.

Del Potro had a great start to the tie-breaker winning the first 3 points, how ever, Federer won the next 2, but, how ever, the Argentine won the tie-breaker comfortably 7-3. The set lasted for 54 minutes.

Here are the Set-1 stats

1st%20set.jpg

Federer served 6 aces & his first serve % also was 60%, just that Del Potro played slightly better in the tie-breakers & 2 lucky net cords helped the Argentine win the first set tie-breaker

2nd Set

Vintage Roger Federer

The second set according to me was the best set that Roger Federer has played post Wimbledon, 2012.

Roger Federer broke Del Potro's service in the 2nd game of the 2nd set & this was the 25th time that Roger Federer broke his opponents service in the opening service game of the set. Roger Federer again broke the Argentine service in the 8th game to comfortably take the set 6-2 in 36 mins.

Here are the Set-2 stats

2nd%20set.jpg

Federer 1st serve % improved to further 65% in the 2nd set & it was absolute vintage Federer in the 2nd set.

3rd Set

Del Potro broke Roger Federer's service in the very 1st game of the 3rd set after Roger Federer double faulted. Federer had two break points in the next game, but couldn't utilize those as the Argentine's served much better in the 3rd set.

After this Federer didn't get a chance to break the Argentine's serve as Del Potro served out the set 6-4 in 50 minutes.

The end score-line read 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 & overall match duration was 2 hours & 20 minutes.

Here are the overall match stats----

final%20set.jpg

Inspite of this loss, Roger Federer is just a win away from securing his place in the World Tour Finals, 2013. Here are the 3 simple conditions (if any one of those comes true), Federer will qualify for World Tour Finals, 2013(click here).

Is there any video of the 10 minute standing ovation? because i couldn't see it. Despite the final results, roger played a great match. That double fault in the first game of the third set made me so angry. Just remember one thing, in the first final of nadal before his extraordinay comeback he was defeated by the argentine Horacio zeballos. So i believe roger is going to win parís and London :)

What a match! Roger certainly found far better form than he has shown for some time, making some stunning shots and totting up a respectable total of 14 aces in all. It was a very disappointing loss from the perspective of a fan, but must have been inwardly heartbreaking for Roger. He has worked so hard for this and wanted this so much to assure his place in the World Tour Finals and to win again at his "home" tournament in front of a home crowd who were incredibly supportive throughout.

You could sense the desire in Roger. He was willing himself on. Fighting back and putting on a much more impressive performance than we have seen of late.

Sadly, this time luck was not on his side. Juan Martin dipped in the second set, which gave hope to Federer supporters, but battle recommenced in the final set and unfortunately it was not to go Roger's way.

But the humility and mutual respect shown by both men is a real credit to them and the game of tennis.

How Roger kept his composure with the prolonged ovation he received I do not know. Just reading of it brings tears to my eyes.

Federer showed glimpses of his old self, especially in the second set where he served brilliantly. When he was under pressure, he came up with un-returnable serves and that's what he did best during his best years. His game is coming back, but he still looks a bit rusty. In the first game of third set, he suddenly lost concentration, it seemed, and that decided the match. Overall, We saw more competitive Roger in the final, but he needs to improve more for next year.
