Roger Federer sealed his place in his 12th consecutive World Tour Finals as he defeated Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hour & 22 minutes to reach the Round-3 of BNP Paribas Masters, 2013.

Set-1

Roger Federer continued his form from Basel & immediate broke Anderson's service in the very first game. Federer served much better & didn't face any break point in the first set.

He comfortably won the 1st set 6-4 in 40 minutes.

Here are the first set stats

BX2a1ccCYAAc8Jf.jpg

Its a good sign for Roger Federer as even his first serve % improved to 68%

2nd Set

The Swiss Maestro broke Anderson's service in the 3rd & 5th game to get to a 4-1 lead. Anderson service has been one of the primary reasons for his rise in 2013 & he ensuring a Top-20 ranking in 2013. But, today, the service faltered & Federer made the full use of it.

How ever, Roger Federer lost his concentration for a brief while serving for the match at 5-2. Federer got broken in the 8th game, then Anderson had a comfortable hold to make it 5-4.

Carrying on with this momentum, the South African had two more break points in the 10th game, but, Federer managed to save those two break points with two fine serves & then Federer sealed the match on his first match point to win the set 6-4 in 40 minutes.

Here are the overall match stats

BX2kq0oCYAA9FE3.jpg

Federer's 1st serve % for the match stood at 65%. On the other hand, Anderson's first serve was a mere 58% & the South African made 35 unforced errors in the match.

Roger Federer's next opponent in Round-3 (Round of 16) will be Philipp Kohlschreiber who defeated Tommy Haas once again to book his place in the Round of 16. The match will be on Thursday.

Roger Federer in the presser, "I feel good for the first time since Dubai Open (in February, 2013). Feeling very fit & fresh."

Federer in the interview to Sky sports, it's been a tough year, getting to London was one of the goals he always sets himself at the start of the season & he is so glad to have achieved that.

I am trying to make the best decisions point by point and shot by shot.

About the end of the match

Felt slightly disappointed about the end of the match, not closing it out the first time, the match could have easily got even more close, had it been 5-all.

When asked is there any thing that he is doing wrong?

"Not sure if it's anything I am doing wrong or whether my opponents are putting me in the spot in pressure times. Hard to pinpoint what it is. (I'll talk with my coach about it). Overall I thinks I was quite solid today."

On next match vs Kohlschreiber (Round-3 on 31st October, Thursday) -

He plays almost similar to Anderson but isn't as tall as Anderson, so he'll have better movement for sure. He's dangerous, does a good job, I must stay offensive and not let him play his game. I need to make sure that I serve well, keep out of trouble and go for it on the return.

65% is decent percentage. As long as he makes his serves at that rate, he should do well. I think his game is coming back. I hope he wins both of the remaining tournaments(which means he will help his friend Nadal achieve year-end no.1).

BTW, Nike have finally tailored the 'zebra shirt' to fit Federer perfectly. In Basel, it looked a bit too big. :)

Overall a good match. 65% first serve. 23 winners and 22 unforced. He really made Anderson feel pressurized in certain situations hence just 15 winners and 35 unforced. This is a good sign and he is getting better.

Isn't it good to see that first serve percentage up to a decent level.  So important.  And great to see a little more consistency overall from Roger.  A very enjoyable win to watch apart from the last-minute hiccups.  In his post-match interview he said he was disappointed with that so it's good to know he's aware of it.  Onwards and upwards.  Kohlschreiber today.  To think that just a few months ago I would have dismissed this as an easy win for Roger.  Hopefully we're getting back to that point now.

Allez Roger!

And thanks to all for the match reports, pics, videos etc.  Great stuff!

It certainly is encouraging to see Roger raising his game consistently with each match he plays. With the exception of the slight dip when he got broken when he first served for this match, his performance has been much more impressive. Fortunately this time he was two breaks up and did not squander this second chance to take the match.

Interesting to see the grey zebra shirt has been tailored to give a better fit and now sports the RF logo on the left sleeve :)

Nike wouldn't mind doing that. They brought in matching wristband as well for Roger. They can now sell the shirt for $90 instead of $65 with RF logo. :P

Roger says he's happy with his fitness for the first time since Dubai and that means a lot. I hope he continues with his current physical training regime and stay away from back injury forever! I'm looking forward to Brisbane and Melbourne already!

Watching Federer v Kohlschreiber. So far so good. 3-2 Federer in 1st set. He's hitting the ball with more conviction. Very good to see.

A few unforced errors on the backhand side, but not too bad. Kohlschreiber is doing what he should do, applying pressure on Federer's backhand. Oooh.... bad volley. 2 breakpoints.

Good aggressive play saves both BPs. 2 unreturnable serves and he wins his service game! Great stuff!

BTW, Djokovic struggled and lost 1st set in his match against Isner before prevailing in 3 sets. Isner served really well in the 1st set and threatened to beat Nole by taking it in tiebreaker, but Djokovic was just rock solid.

Yes!!! He serves out the set with an ace. It's far from his best tennis, but at least he looks more comfortable and free-swinging than he's been for a long time. Still some problems with consistency, but he looks much, much more fluid and agile than he's been most of the year. Kohlschreiber is a really solid player and Federer can get a lot of confidence back by beating him.
