Roger Federer won his 1st match against a Top-5 opponent in 2013 after he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of Bercy Masters, 2013. This is now the 15th consecutive year (starting from 1999) when Federer has defeated at least one Top-5 ranked opponent on the ATP World Tour.

1385955_605144346193529_367457172_n.jpg

These two had played just 5 days back in the finals of Swiss Indoors, Basel where Del Potro had defeated Roger Federer in a tight 3 setter match.

1st set

Roger Federer's service as we have been discussing has been improving ever since Basel. The trend continued in the 1st set as Federer's service % improved to further 77% in the 1st set.

On the other hand, Del Potro also served quite well, but, had a very poor service game in the 4th game that gave Federer a 3-1 lead in the 1st set.

That one service break proved sufficient as Federer won the 1st set 6-3 in 30 minutes.

Here are the first set stats

BX_ybCRCAAAbGNn.jpg

Clearly, this was the best ever set that Federer has played against a Top-10 opponent in 2013. 77% 1st serves, 17 winners & 4 U.E... 100% net points won.

Set-2

Federer had a break point in the opening game of the 2nd set, but the Argentine managed to save that.

In the 4th game of the 2nd set, a funny incident happened. Del potro while chasing a drop shot from Federer jumped across the net and almost hugged Federer :).

Here are a few pics from that incident ----

Pics of Federer and Del potro standing on Federer's side of the court after Delpo ran across the net and almost hugged Federer

Here is the video of that  --------

The next 5 games went on service without any break points.

In his first 4 service games of the 2nd set, Federer had lost just 4 points.

But, in the 10th game, while serving 4-5 down, Federer lost his concentration & went on to lose his service & thus, Del Potro won the set 6-4 in 41 minutes.

Here are the second set stats

BX_50LWCUAAAFzb.png

Federer's 1st serve % stood at 73%, just those 12 unforced errors with 3 of those coming in the final game was the root cause for Federer losing the 2nd set.

3rd Set

The first 4 games of the 3rd set went on serve, but, from there on, the match was full of drama.

Federer broke Del Potro's service in the 5th game to get to a 3-2 lead but the Argentine got the break back to make it 3-all.

The Swiss Maestro again broke Delpo's service to get to a 4-3 lead & managed to hold his service in the 8th game on love to get to a 5-3 lead.

Federer then broke Del Potro service for the 3rd time in the very next game to win the set 6-3 in 32 minutes.

Here are the 3rd set stats

3rd%20set.png

As you can see, Federer's 1st serve % dropped to 52% for the set, but, he was able to convert all his break points as Del Potro's service crumbled under pressure.

The end score-line read 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in favor of Roger Federer and this was Federer's first win over the Argentine after three successive losses & it took him 103 minutes to register his 14th win over the Argentine. Roger Federer now leads the head to head 14-5 vs Juan Martin Del Potro.

Here are the overall match stats ------

6mrjWzY.png

Roger Federer will meet Novak Djokovic in the first semi-finals on Saturday. This will the first meeting of Federer & Djokovic in 2013. Federer leads the head to head 16-13 vs Novak Djokovic.

Thanks Vibhu et al for the wonderful pics, videos.  What a funny man Delpo is :) . One of my favourite players of the moment.   Wasn't it wonderful to watch Roger playing so well in the first set. Real vintage Roger.  And so good to see that old first serve percentage up where it should be. Now if he could just maintain that level for 2 sets I think he's got a real chance of  beating Djoko tomorrow.  However, I'm already very happy he's got as far as he has, and maybe after all it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a couple of days rest before London.  How stupid to put these two tournaments on without a break! I understand that will change next  year though.

Allez Roger. Brilliant stuff!

Federer‪'s Press Conference after his win

After your win over Del Potro, do you feel you're getting closer to your best tennis again?

Yes, this is probably my best win of the year. It’s my first top 10 win since January. It's been a while. But I have had some decent matches along the way maybe against less famous players than Juan Martin so I'm happy it worked out well today. I think it was a particularly good first set and a bit of a pity I couldn't break early in the second. I think Juan Martin did well to hang around. Maybe it was a frustrating first hour for him. He found a way to stay in there and take his opportunity that presented itself at the end of the second to force a third set. I think I did well today to start stronger this time around in the third set. It was something I couldn't quite do in Basel. I think I was just hitting a better ball again today and moving well and taking good decisions. I’m very happy with my level of play today. I think it was a good match from start to finish. That's definitely good for my confidence, because those are the kind of wins I need right now.

This tournament at Bercy has had a lot more of the top players going further than. A lot of times there can be unexpected players at this stage. Does it feel different?

Number one, we're all here. Number two, I don't get the sense that many players are extremely tired. I remember 10, 15 years ago we would come here and feel like we’d be saying “God, I just want to go on vacation.” This year I don't feel like this. When I speak to players, everybody is eager to do well and play well. It seems like we are recovering quicker and able to take every tournament extremely seriously. It's become super professional, so it's less up and down with the mood swings, as well. Back in the day it was much more extreme. When everybody is talking about how tired they are it affects you more. It makes you think, “Yeah, that's true, I'm super tired.” It's dark, all those things affect you much more. But it's nice to see, and it's interesting to see the eight guys in the quarter-finals also being the same eight guys at the World Tour Finals in London. Well, I guess today’s outcome is something positive for everybody. For the guys who lost, they have more time to prepare, and for the guys who won, they move on and gain more points and more confidence.

Next up it’s Novak Djokovic. What are your thoughts before you go up against him?

I’d certainly prefer to play him now than four months ago. I'm confident once more and I believe in my chances, I believe I can win. But if I had played a few weeks ago or a few months ago I might not have been so sure. He’s having a good year so I will have to try my best. I think we always play well against each other. When we play, it's very athletic. We will both try to be aggressive and take the initiative. It will be even more important here, given the surface and the conditions. It's interesting. I have always liked this rivalry with Novak.‬

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a Roger Federer to smile.

Thanks Kishore :)

Great win for Roger. This should do all the good for his confidence. Although he is the underdog, I fancy Federer's chances against Djokovic. It's party time now for Roger after getting through all the early rounds. He is in the semis, the real fun begins from here. He should just go out and enjoy his game, not worrying about winning or losing. He is almost back to the level he was at the beginning of this year now!

Watching the match now. Roger has won the 1st set. Great tennis from Roger. I must say Djokovic looks rather nervous. He knows this one's for year end no. 1. Anyway, Roger is playing some great tennis. This is the Federer we know.

Looks like Roger hasn't improved enough to beat Djoko. He's getting close, though. Maybe next week, we'll see Roger doing more damage!
