Fun facts about Miami Masters

1) From 1997 to 2007, all matches at Miami were best of five setters.

2) In 2006, the tournament became the first event in the United States to use instant replays to allow players to challenge close line calls. Players were allowed two challenges per set, with an additional challenge allowed for Tie Breakers.

The men's final has been abandoned three times since the tournament's inception.

  • In 1989, Thomas Muster was hit by a drunk driver the night before the final, which put him in a wheelchair for months. He was able to win the championship eight years later.

  • In 1996, Goran Ivanišević retired from the match early with a stiff neck.

  • In 2004, Guillermo Coria retired during the first game of the fourth set due to back pain and an inability to move properly. The problem later turned out to be kidney stones.

The men's 2nd round of the Miami masters is set to begin from tonight . The first match of the day will feature World no. 4 Andy Murray who will face the left-handed Colombian Alejandro Falla ( who pulled a somewhat upset win over Denis Istomin in the 1st round ) . Murray is expected to come through this match , but stranger things have happened in tennis , Falla is a decent player ( Took Federer to 5 sets in Wimbledon 2010 ) . But never the less I expect Murray to win in 2 tight sets .

World no .2 Rafael Nadal will face Santiago Giraldo in the night session . Should be an easy match for Nadal ( Nadal holds a 4-0 head to head vs Giraldo ) . Nadal's draw is rather easy ( possibly the easiest among the top 4 ) , faces no such threats until the Quarter-Finals .

Among other notable matches on Friday there's Davydenko vs. Isner and Nalbandian vs. Tipsarevic . Both have the potential to be keenly contested matches . So keep an eye out for those matches .

Venus Williams is set to make her return in Women's tennis but she faces the tough task of facing Kvitova (3). I wish Venus the best .

Djokovic will face Baghdatis on Saturday .This match also has the potential of being exciting one .It's true Baghdatis is no longer the player he used to be but on his given day he is still capable of pulling off an upset . Though I expect Djokovic to come through .

Our Maestro Roger Federer will face USA's Ryan Harrison on Saturady . It's a tricky 2nd round for Federer . Federer-Harrison only faced each other once in 2011 Indian Wells (R-16) in which Fed won 7-6 ,6-3 . Harrison is an exciting young man and has all the potential but considering Roger's current form and his experience I expect him to win in straight sets . Miami is one of the slowest hard -courts on tour , so surely Fed will need some time to adapt to the courts and the weather . Being the genius he is , it shouldn't be a problem . Hopefully Fed will get his 20 th masters title at the end of this tournament .

A special mention for Fernando Gonzalez who retired from tennis .Thank you Gonzo for all the wonderful , dynamic and enjoyable matches over the years . Wish you all the best in life . God bless.

Seen an interesting tweet from @@FootFault_ yesterday on Twitter. It was about possible retirements this year...

Depending on how their 2012 goes, I reckon the retirement shortlist is: Roddick, Kim, Dulko, Tanasugarn, Petrova, Venus, Sveta, JJ, Szavay, Dokic, Jill, Gonzalez, Nalbandian, Ferrero, Haas, Malisse, Clement, Scheuttler, Hewitt.

Omit Gonzalez & Kimmy from list because they're definites for 2012. Loads of possible retirements mentioned. I think a few of them might retire by the end of the year. It's the perfect year really with the Olympics going on.

Thoughts?

And Eilis, I don't really wanna think about it, cuz if I do - it will make me sad ... thinking about all
those great players not being on the tour again ... wow. That's crazy and sucks - big time...

Federer is through to the 3 rd round of the Miami masters with a 6-2 7-6(3) win over USA's Ryan Harrison. This match was potentially tricky but Fed was off to a great start ,racing to a 3-0 lead in no time .

He was untouchable on his serve winning 24/29 service points in the first set .At 5-2 Fed broke Harrison's serve once again with a brilliantly hit cross court FH and sealed the 1st 6-2 in just 24 mins .Harrison showed more fight in the 2nd set but Fed got the early break . At 5-3 Fed was serving for the match when things got a little tricky mainly due to a rather unfortunate event .When Fed was down a bp on that game Harrison's shot dropped on the line but someone from the audience called it out.Fed thought the call came from the linespeople and thinking the ball was out didnt play the next shot .As a result he lost the point and the game.

A series of bad line calls followed in the next few games but Fed kept his calm and things were tied at 6-6 .Fed played a great tie-break and finally closed out the match by winning the Tb 7-3 .Federer being the great guy he is embraced Harrison at the net and wished him the best for the season. This was an wonderful gesture from the great man , sure it will mean a lot to the youngstar.

Highlights from the match ---------

Federer faces Andy Roddick in the 3rd round which could be another tough match for Roger .Eventhough Fed holds a 21-2 Head tohead record vs. Andy but A-Rod has had a great deal of success in Miami. He is a 2 time champ here .Also beat the Fed here in 2008. Roddick's serve is one of the best in mens tennis and Roger knows that .All these years Fed has done a great job of blocking the serve back into play and once the rally start Federer's groundstrokes were supreme .I expect him to do the same in his 3rd round match vs. A Rod .

Well best of luck to the maestro , hoping for a cracking match .

Inevitable but no, please. Retirements make me sad too. :(

The first set was a true clinic & it was a sheer pleasure to see Roger playing this way.

Probably, had that some one in crowd, not yelled out to that shot, Roger would have won the 2nd set 6-4..

Still, gotta say, it was a sheer pleasure & so magical to see Roger playing in such a magificient way.

For almost 90% of the match, it looked as if its Roger of 2005 :)

Ahhhhhh, I was soooo lucky to get to see Roger play on Saturday. Well, at least the second set. Why is it, that I'm so busy at this time. I really wish I had more time. Where has all my time gone?
Hopefully it all will change after this Friday. Now it's clean up time and on Friday I can give the keys for the old flat back and I'm freeeeeee ;o)
But until then, still a lot of stuff to do.
Just found out, that Fed and A-Rod will play 0.30am Swiss time. Grmpf! Don't know yet if I can watch it or not.
By the way, those free streams seem to be getting worst when it comes to quality. Can't really find a good one these days. Where have all the good streams gone? ;-)
Anyway, another Monday morning ... and time for me to hit the road and get some stuff done. Talk to you soon and COME ON ROGER! :))
My hero, my addiction & my everything.

Finally the time has arrived .Fed faces Roddick tonight in Miami.Fed vs. Roddick match is scheduled at 7:30 pm local time(est) . This match has all the potential of being a blockbuster .This will be the duo's 24 th career meeting , Roger winning 21/23 of their previous matches .It is true that the head to head heavily favours Fed but having said that anything can happen in Tennis on a given day. Roddick won his match vs Muller very comfortably .He said he feels good and hitting the ball well .So he believes he can win .On the other hand the Fed is on fire .He is striking the ball superbly , moving great , super confident .Thats a dangerous sign for any opponent . So I think Fed will win in two very tight sets or possibly three sets. Best of luck to our king .Hope he rocks tonight .Allez :-)
