Here's the Part-2 of my semi-final scenarios for  World Tour Finals, 2013. In the first part, I covered the Group-A & in this part, we will have a quick look at the scenarios of Group-B before the start of Day-4 at World Tour Finals, 2013.

This is how the Group-standing of Group-B looks like before the start of Roger Federer vs Richard Gasquet match

grpb.png

Now, here's a quick look at the scenarios (updated before the start of Federer vs Gasquet match) ----

1) If Novak Djokovic beats Del Potro & Gasquet, Federer beats Gasquet & Del Potro, Djokovic & Federer will qualify.

2) If Federer beats Gasquet in straight sets & then Del Potro in straight sets  & if Del Potro beats Djokovic 2 sets to 1 & then Djokovic goes on to beat Gasquet in straight sets, then Federer will be No. 1 in the Group & Djokovic No. 2.

3) If Federer beats Gasquet in straight sets & then Del Potro in 2 sets to 1 & if Del Potro beats Djokovic 2 sets to 1 & then Djokovic goes on to beat Gasquet in straight sets, then also, Djokovic & Federer will qualify for semis with 5-3 sets win as Del Potro will be 5-4.

4) If Gasquet beats Federer in 2 sets to 1 & then, Federer beats Del Potro in straight sets  & if Djokovic beats Del Potro in straight sets & then Djokovic goes on to beat Gasquet in straight sets, then Djokovic & Federer will qualify.

So, the best scenario for :

Roger Federer to qualify for semis is to beat Richard Gasquet by any margin & Del Potro by any margin & hope, Djokovic beats Del Potro tonight, as that will 100% ensure Roger Federer will qualify for semis.

Scenarios updated after Federer defeated Gasquet in straight sets:

Federer is now 3-2 in terms of sets won & 25-25 in terms of games won & lost & will have a chance on Saturday eve if Del Potro beats Djokovic today

(i) Roger Federer will 100% qualify if Djokovic beats Del Potro today & Federer beats Del Potro on Saturday.

(ii) How ever, if Del Potro beats Djokovic in straight sets & Djokovic beats Gasquet in straight sets & Federer manages to beat Del Potro in 2 sets to 1, then Federer & Del Potro will be through with 5-3 & Djokovic will miss out as he will be on 4-3 sets won & loss.

But, in the above scenario, if Del Potro loses in straight sets vs Federer, then Federer will obviously qualify & Djokovic or Del Potro (who so ever a higher games % won) will qualify.

Here are the scenarios in a nutshell :

(i) If Djokovic wins tonight vs Del Potro, Djokovic will be 100% through to the semis & the winner of Del Potro- Federer will be the 2nd semi-finalist from this group.

(ii) Who so ever wins the crucial match between Roger Federer and Del Potro will surely* qualify for the semis, (if Federer loses, he will surely be out from semis, though Delpo still has a chance if manages to beat Djokovic tonight).

(iii) Djokovic is likely to end the Group-B on 1st position provided he doesn't lose to Del Potro in straight sets & Roger Federer then goes on to beat Del Potro by any margin.

(iv)  Djokovic will miss out from semis if he loses to If Del Potro in straight sets & Djokovic wins in straight sets vs Gasquet, then Djokovic will be on 4-3 in terms of sets won.

& Roger Federer will be 5-3 if he manages to beat Del Potro even in 2 sets to one.

& Del Potro will also be on 5-3, in this case, Roger Federer & Del Potro will qualify.

So, the only scenario where in Djokovic (at this point of time) will miss out from semis is if he loses to Del Potro in straight sets & then Federer beats Del Potro by 2 sets to 1.

Scroll down 3 posts for some more scenarios.

I don't think delpo will beat djokovic even in three. Just in the form that djokovic is in. It is very hard and delpotro will hae to really smack to win. Btw thanks again for you're post and even though most of this stuff I already knew it still helps. Thanks.

Another scenario worth discussing here ----

If Del Potro beats Djokovic 2 sets to 1 tonight, Federer beats Del Potro in 2 sets to 1 & if then Djokovic goes on to beat Gasquet in straight sets,

then, we will have Djokovic & Federer on 5-3 sets

while ,Del Potro will be on 5-4 sets.

& in that case, Djokovic & Federer will make it to the semis & Del Potro will miss out.

So, its 100% sure that ------

(i) who ever wins Federer vs Del potro match will be through to the semis.

(ii) Djokovic will miss out only if he loses in straight sets vs Del Potro or if he loses in 3 sets vs Del Potro & then loses a set against Gasquet as that will make it a tie between Djokovic & Del Potro (which will get settled by the number of % of games won).

I will repeat the scenarios as sky sports commentary team have got it wrong:

(I) If Delpotro beats Djokovic in 3 sets & loses to Federer in 3 sets -- then, he will be be on 5-4

(ii) & If Djokovic loses vs Del potro in 3 sets & wins in straight sets vs Gasquet, then he will be on 5-3

(iii) & if Federer wins vs Del potro in 3 sets, then Federer will be on 5-3.

That way, Djokovic & Federer will qualify for semi-finals.

Now, that Djokovic defeated Del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-3,

Djokovic has reached Semi-finals of World Tour Finals, 2013, he was the 2nd to qualify for WTF & now, the 2nd to reach Semis.

As, Djokovic defeated both Federer & Del Potro, he will remain as the #1 in his group even if he loses his match vs Richard Gasquet.

As per round robin rules for WTF, if two players are equal in number of match wins, then the player who won their head to head will be at a higher rank in the group.

If 3 players are equal in number of matches won, then head to head isn't relevant, then sets won % is relevant, if sets won-lost % is equal, if sets won-lost % is equal, then number of games won-lost % & post that, number of points won-lost %.

So, Djokovic will be #1 in the group under all scenarios.

For a detailed explanation on how players qualify for Semis from the round robin group stage, click here.

Now, its very simple, who ever wins, Federer vs Del Potro match will qualify for the semi-finals of WTF & will be the 2nd semi-finalist from Group-B.

Now, if Rafa Nadal wins just a set vs Tomas Berdych, he will surely end Group A as #1,

So, most likely, the semi-finals will be

Rafa Nadal vs Federer/DelPotro (1st semis)

  & Novak Djokovic vs Wawrinka/Berdych (2nd semis)

For Group A scenarios, click here.
