Ever Tried, Ever Failed, Fail again until your 36th time comes

Stan Wawrinka reached his 1st grand slam final in his 36th grand slam as he defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6(3), 7-6 (4) in 3 hours & 31 minutes to secure his place in the Sunday's final where he will meet the winner of the second semi-final to be played on Friday between Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal.

This win ensures that Stan Wawrinka has assured himself of a career high ranking of at least No. 6 (No. 3 if he wins Australian Open title) & unless Roger Federer wins Australian Open, for the first time in his career, he will be ranked Swiss No. 1, read more about the ATP Ranking scenarios post Australian Open, 2014 right here.

Stan Wawrinka had two heart-breaking losses last year. First one was against Novak Djokovic in the 4th Round of Australian Open, 2013 & the 2nd loss came in the Davis Cup just 12 days after that, where in the 1st Round doubles tie vs Team Czech Republic, he & Marco Chiudinelli lost 24-22 in the 5th set vs Tomas Berdych & Lukas Rosol in what was the longest ever doubles match in the open era history.

Ironically, Wawrinka got the revenge of both those defeats by defeating Djokovic & Berdych in successive matches enroute to his first ever final of a grand slam.

Today, it was the turn of Team Berdych to put a towel on the camera in the players box & the entire team of Tomas Berdych including his girlfriend Ester Satarova (in picture) was spotted wearing the same shirt as his shirt.

ester.jpg

This trend of covering the camera in the players box was started by Severin Luthi & Mirka Federer at US Open, 2012.

Set-1

Wawrinka started the set with extreme confidence & was looking completely relaxed & at ease while playing in his second successive semi-final at a grand slam event.

The Swiss got the 1st break in the eight game as he wrapped up the first set in the 9th game 6-3 in just 31 minutes.

Here are the first set stats -----

Bep0lGMCAAAMj9b.png

Though, Wawrinka's 1st set % was only 62, but, still he didn't face any break point & he capitalized on the only break point that he got in the set

Set-2

There was no break of serve in the 2nd set as the second set went to a tie-breaker. Tomas Berdych served magnificently in the 2nd set & got off to an early lead in the tie-breaker & from there on, there was no stopping for Berdych as he wrapped up the tie-breaker 7-1.

The 2nd set lasted 56 minutes.

Here are the second set stats ---------

Third set

The third set also went almost in the identical fashion as the 2nd set. Berdych got the only break point of the set in the 9th game but how ever Wawrinka saved the break point and held on to make it 5-4.

Also, it needs to be added here that the majority of the crowd looked pro Wawrinka than Berdych.

Picture of Stan Wawrinka's box with Magnus Norman, Severin Luthi, Stan's dad Wolfram Wawrinka, Stan's mom Isabelle Wawrinka & the Swiss man's supporter cheering him on.

The third set also went to a Tie-Breaker.

The third set tie-breaker was opposite to the 2nd set tie-breaker. Wawrinka got the first mini break. How ever, two double faults by Berdych costed him dearly as Wawrinka won the 3rd set tie-breaker 7-3. The set lasted 55 minutes.

First reaction of Wawrinka after winning the 3rd set --------

4th Set

The first service game of the 4th set was the longest game of the match. Wawrinka had a break point & the game saw six deuces & last 10 minutes as Berdych held on to make it 1-0.

There were no break of serves again in the 4th set as the fourth set again went to a tie-breaker.

Wawrinka got the mini break on the first service of Berdych & then Wawrinka, won his next two service points to get to a 3-0 lead. Yet another double fault by Berdych made it 4-1 in favor of the Swiss.

Berdych managed to win the next point when he forcesdWawrinka to overhit a backhand to trail 4-2 but Wawrinka fired an ace down the T to move to within two points of the final.

The Swiss then gently tapped his racket against his head to remind himself to remain focussed. And after Berdych overhit a forehand return, Wawrinka brought up three match points. Wawrinka double faulted to let the first one slide. But Wawrinka managed to win the tie-breaker 7-4 after Berdych overhit a ball.

Stan Wawrinka's first reaction after winning the match

Here's the video of the match point -------

Stan Wawrinka in his post match on-court interview to Jim Courier stated that, "Federer texted me last night and told me he was so happy to have two Swiss guys in the semifinals,” Wawrinka said. “I told him for you it’s normal. For me, it’s not normal. I will watch the [Federer-Nadal] match on my TV, maybe with some popcorn.”

Stan Wawrinka's career prize money after this win crosses 10 Million USD

Before the start of Australian Open, Stan Wawrinka's career prize money was 8.83 million, but as a result of reaching finals of Australian Open, 2014, he is guaranteed of 1.3 million, which will take his career prize money over 10 million USD.

Stan Wawrinka post match press conference/interview --------

Q.  Why are you still smiling?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  I don't know either (smiling).

Q.  Explain the emotions, what you feel.
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  I feel great.  It's amazing, you know.  I didn't expect to make a final in Grand Slam in my career.  Tonight it's happening, so I'm really happy.

I'm working really hard since many years, try to improve my game, try to get some big match in big stadium.  Now I'm the first final in a Grand Slam, so I can be only really happy.

Q.  Why do you think it happened here this time?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Well, this time it's because I'm at the top of my career.  Already last year I had the feeling that I was playing better, but I was dealing better the pressure also.  I'm more mature.  I'm 28 now.  I'm on the tour since 10 years.  Now I feel that it's my time to play my best tennis.

I'm enjoying more what I'm doing, when I'm winning, and also maybe I know more how to deal with all the pressure around.

Q.  You said you never expected to make a final.  When was the moment you realized when you could?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  After the match won tonight, I was there (laughter).

No, but before that, for sure.  After the semifinal in US Open I knew that I was close to be there.  But still was for me far away to make a final in Grand Slam.  You never know what's happen.  I was disappointed to lost against Novak in US Open, but I knew I was close with the level.

But for me I was so far.  Was not my goal at all to make final in Grand Slam.

Q.  One point separated you and Tomas.  Did you feel it was that close out there?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah, was really close, for sure.  Was strange game.  I don't think we play our best tennis, but we serve really well.  We were really aggressive on service game.  Was going really fast tonight so was not easy to make some long rally and to make him work.

But, yeah, when you play a four set match with three tiebreak is rare, but try to stay really aggressive on the tiebreak, try to went for it.  My goal was to be more aggressive than him, try to take advantage in the point.

Yeah, I had the feeling he was really nervous and really tired because he gave me a little bit some point in the tiebreak, third set tiebreak and fourth set tiebreak, with some double fault.

I think he start to be really nervous.

Q.  Do you have a preference of who you might play on Sunday?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  If they can pull out, would be good (smiling).

You know, my record against Rafa is not really good, and neither against Roger.  But for sure to play a Swiss final will be amazing, first for Switzerland, for the country.  He is the best player ever.  For me it's my first final.  To imagine to play against Roger would be amazing.

Q.  Would it be a little bit strange because you spent so much time together?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah, for sure.  But I always said that I prefer to play him in a final in a tournament than the first or quarterfinal.  So it will be still amazing.

Q.  Not looking too far forward to Sunday, but if it was Roger, where would Severin sit?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  In Roger's box, for sure.  He's his coach.  He's his coach, but he's been helping me since many years, and much more since two years and a half.  It's more like because Roger is really nice and he accept that.

He accept that Severin can stay in my match.  He can come sometimes for practice and talk a lot with me.  That's all because Roger is really nice.

Q.  Whoever you play, it's going to be a player who has been there so many times before.  It's your first time.  Will that make you feel daunted or give you some freedom in the way you play?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  I don't know.  I will see.  I don't know how I will feel for first final.

Again, I'm enjoying all what's happening here.  I'm playing great tennis.  I know that I'm going to feel ready physically because I have two day off to be ready for the final.

The most important is that my game is there.  If I make the final here, it's because I beat Berdych tonight; I won against Novak also.  I had some great match.  So that's mean I have the level to be there.

Q.  You said you had not such a great record against either.  You didn't have a good record against Novak, so does that give you confidence you can change that?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Take the confidence from my level in general.  I know that I'm playing my best tennis.  I'm moving well.  I'm really aggressive.  I'm serving well.  I always find solution.  So that's where I take solution, the confidence.

But, you know, I will see.  I will watch the match tomorrow and see how I'm going to play on Sunday.

Q.  Have you heard from Roger?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah, for sure he text me, but I didn't check my phone yet.

Q.  Last time we talked to Roger and he said he's cheering every time he watches you on TV.  He makes a fist pump, a high five with Mirka.  How will you react tomorrow on his winning points?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Well, I will be really happy.  Again, as I say, if we can make a Swiss final, it will be something just amazing in a Grand Slam.  I will be really happy if he can win tomorrow.

I saw some match of him.  He's playing really good tennis again.  Tomorrow is going to be, like always when they play each other in semifinal or final, they always puts everything on the court.  It's going to be a great match, for sure.

I always try to watch when they play because you can always learn.  You can always see the best tennis ever on the tour.  So it's going to be fun to watch.

Q.  Any special celebration in case Roger wins tomorrow?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  No, no, nothing special.

Q.  Do you think now you should try to persuade Roger to play Davis Cup because it's a crime with Switzerland with two players like you and him don't win the Davis Cup?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  You know, it's not because I make my first final in Grand Slam that I will ask him to change.  I'm in the top 10 since last year now.  We talk a lot about Davis Cup.  It's okay.

It's not the thing I want to think now because I'm in the Grand Slam.  I'm in my first final of a Grand Slam.  Even if Davis Cup is next week, I don't want to think about Davis Cup at all.

Q.  Did your win over Djokovic, did you have the experience of beating Novak you've become a different player confidence wise?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah, more confidence with myself.  More confidence to go for the match, to finish the match also.  But, you know, last year I play four times against Tomas.  He beat me the first in Davis Cup, but then I won three times.

He was always the one who was a little bit choking few moments, a little bit down, and that's what happened today again.

Q.  How did you feel about today's atmosphere?  Did you feel the fans were behind you?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah.  I had a lot of fans here.  I think for sure atmosphere is great.  Play first semifinal here.  Full crowd was amazing people.

Q.  There was only one break in the whole match.  Did you notice that?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yeah, yeah, I know.  I know what's happen during the match (laughter).

Q.  Going back to when you said you didn't expect to be in a slam final.  Three, four years ago, was that a problem, that you didn't see yourself as a finalist or slam winner?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  No, was the same before to come here.  I didn't expect to make the final.  I didn't came here like thinking, Oh, maybe it will be amazing to make final.  For me, I was really far from that.  For me was something different level.

As I always say, I always try to improve, I always try to win every matches, I always go on court to try to beat my opponent, and that's what I did during all the tournament here.

Q.  Were other people telling you you could be in a Grand Slam final, your team?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA:  Yes.  You know, it's tough to put for me as a goal to make final in a Grand Slam, especially with the player there, with Novak, with Rafa, with Roger, with Andy.  In the past it was really difficult, so it's not a goal.

It was more like we knew I had the level to beat the top player, but to be in the final you have to do it again and again.

Tomas Berdych's post match press conference/interview---

Q.  You won 142 points and Stan won 143.  Does it make it any harder when it's so close?

TOMAS BERDYCH:  Basically doesn't matter.  Just show how the result was close.  That's it.

You know, I mean, I just saw the statistic right quickly after I came back.  As you said, it's been by one point and one break, that's it.

Q.  What did you feel was the difference out there tonight?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  Well, I mean, if I would feel the difference then I would be nearly a genius.  As you said, the match was extremely even and it was really so close.

It's really hard to find what could be the difference.  I mean, we both play great.  We play a good match.  Stan was the one that just took it, and that's it.

Q.  Harder time than usual reading his serve?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  Well, I mean, I got one.  I made a chance to break him; didn't happen.  He made just only one which definitely decide the match.  You know, that's it.

No, I didn't have a problem with that.  Serving great.  Serving a lot of aces.  No, definitely not.

Q.  Do you feel on another day it could have been your match?  Do you think that way?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  No, I don't.  I definitely don't think like that.  I'm a guy who lives in the present time.  This theoretic speaking, that's not my style, so I'm not going to give you the answer for that.  I don't know it.

Q.  You used to buy watches every time you had a big result here.  Is this a watch worthy tournament, making semis?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  No, I mean, well, this is really what is not part of the, I don't know, like the press conference right after the match.

I have other feelings going through my mind and you just coming with a question like that.  Really, I don't know what to say about it.

Q.  What do you take, if anything, out of the match tonight?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  It was a very good match.  I play very well.  I build the tactics and the game plan on my strength.  It was working pretty good.  You know, just there was one thing that I miss, and it was my service game in the first set.

Other than that, you know, I was able to play aggressive, not to do that many mistakes, you know, attacking Stan, especially after those slices backhands.

Basically the game plan was working nearly perfect.  But, you know, just the tiebreak is always a big lottery, and he was the lucky one today.

Q.  Do you remember the last time you played such a close match?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  Well, I mean, I'm starting to get quite annoyed with the matches losing in tiebreaks.  I'm not pretty good in that.  I can give you quite many examples of losing matches in tiebreaks.

I need to improve that, definitely.

Q.  You've played Stan quite a few times in the past year.  Do you feel he's improved every time you've played him?
TOMAS BERDYCH:  Of course.  I said that many times.  I can just repeat the same thing:  It's the player who made the biggest improvement of his game in the last year.

When he starts to work with Magnus his tennis is really, really a different level.  You can see it on the results.  Really there is no question about it.
