Federer fights back to beat Stepanek

Five-time former champion Roger Federer staged a rousing comeback from an 0-2 deficit in the deciding set to beat Radek Stepanek at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday. Federer beat Stepanek 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 in two hours and nine minutes at the ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tournament.

“I started to understand what I was doing wrong,” said Federer. “Which made me maybe play a little bit tentatively from the baseline, what made me not make enough shots [and] why I wasn't playing as aggressively as I wanted to. I couldn't find the right balance between offence and defence.

“It was almost a bit too late for everything, but I kind of hung around and I took the positives out of the match. Radek did a good job of putting the pressure on me and mixing it up. From that standpoint, it was a really difficult match. I'm very pleased to come through.”

Federer sealed the first set in 33 minutes, hitting 10 winners and committing just four unforced errors. At one point the fourth seed won 10 of 12 points to draw clear of Stepanek, who was seeking his third win in 15 meetings over Federer.

Stepanek battled to win his first set against Federer since May 2008 at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. He broke Federer for a 2-1 lead and served for the second set at 5-4, but Federer broke back to 15. Stepanek raised his game in the tie-break, opening up a 6-2 lead.

Stepanek came close to taking a 3-0 lead in the decider, before Federer staged a rousing comeback to win five games in a row en route to recording his 39th win in 44 matches at the Aviation Club.

Federer will next play Lukas Rosol, who overcame eighth seed Dmitry Tursunov early in the day.

What a game that was! Roger Federer really had to dig deep to overcome an inspired Radek Stepanek. The final scoreline belies the on court struggle facing Federer who appeared to have difficulty finding his form today.

The match did not have an auspicious start with Federer being broken in the first game. He then immediately broke back and took charge of this set, breaking Stepanek a second time and then served it out taking the set 6-2

Set One stats

So far so good, things appeared to be going with expectations, judging by the record of their previous meetings, Federer having a 12-2 advantage in their head to head.

But as the second set got underway, once again Roger was broken in the first game. Stepanek was really pulling out all the stops in his efforts to win points. In the eighth game there was an impressive 26 shot rally, which Stepanek finally won. Federer seemed quietly annoyed with himself, but was still rather subdued. I must admit my anxiety levels steady rose through this set.

Federer had to dig deep, and in an exciting game managed to break Stepanek levelling the score at 5 games all. The set finally went to a tie break, which Roger lost 6(4)-7, Stepanek was putting every last ounce of effort into winning his points, even tumbling to the ground on more than one occasion.

Set Two stats

Breaks of serve were becoming too common in this match. Yet again Roger was broken in his first service game of the third set, but this time he broke back a couple of times to take a 5-2 lead, all he had to do now was serve out to win the match. But it was not to be that straight forward, Stepanek broke back, leaving it for Federer to break in the next game to finally take the third set and the match 6-2. 6-7. 6-3.

Federer said he was helped by the great atmosphere generated by the sell-out Centre Court crowd.

1901582_674507962592822_929597972_n.jpg

“I really do feel I have great crowd support here in Dubai. They really get excited,” he said. “The Mexican wave was a treat, you know, to be a part of that. Also the last match, when I hit the shot through my legs, it was amazing, standing ovation at the end of the matches, all those kind of things. I really do appreciate that, to see sort of sell-out crowds in the first couple of or first few days of the tournament.

“It's nice seeing the tournament grow and fans here in Dubai coming to the stadium and having a great time. That's what it's about, you know, for them, anyway, and for us as well. I do appreciate all the support I get here.”

Here's the clip of the moment when Federer slices a ball to "test" the quick reactions of a ball boy ... Great catch :)

Watched both the matches and there was a gulf of difference between the two. The match against stepanek was perhaps the worst i have seen Federer serve for a long time. I was never a fan of this big racquet and nothing i have seen to change my veiws about the raquet. The previous one had a heavier head and perhaps roger could do with a few lead tapes on the raquet head.. I dont like roger to hit the balls with that amount of topspin ,rather hit the forehand a bit flatter when playing the down the line shots. But i have seen some positives also. I have never seen a grittier roger federer than perhaps say in a couple of years. The hunger , the grit to fight it out , when the things are not going well have increased manifolds. But to succeed against the top rank players consistently he has to improve his level of gameplay which i am sure he is capable of. Hoping for the best for the rest of the tournament.

Agree with you about Roger's grittiness Arijeet Sen.   The difference for me between this match and Roger of last year is that it wasn't until he got broken in the last set that I started to worry he might lose. Last year I would have been worried from the outset.  His comments in the presser explain everything really.  When he says he started to understand what he was doing wrong, played a bit tentatively from the baseline and couldn't find the right balance between offence and defence, I think he is politely saying he completely lost it, which seemed to be the case. Watching his face during the rests he looked confused, then suddenly towards the end, the familiar serene look appeared on his face and I knew it would be okay.  He certainly did get himself involved in a lot of baseline scraps though, and did quite well in them for the most part.  I've seen Stepanek play like this before. I don't think he's given enough credit for the way he can play at times, but he always seems to lose it at some point, which contributed somewhat to Roger's win I think.

Anyway, the important thing is Roger dug deep and got through a tough match.  It would have been really, really depressing if he hadn't at this stage. Later on he can lose matches like this if he wants to, but not right now where his revival is still a work in progress.  Hoping for an easier match today, and also for the return of Monday's outfit!

What time is the match - is it around 5.30 UK time?

PS. Forgot to say, thanks to everyone, as always for the match reports, pics etc.   :)

Re what you are saying about the weight of the racquet head Arijeet, I saw Roger peeling a square of white tape off the throat of a new racquet after he took it out of his bag and was preparing to play with it. I wonder if that was lead tape ...

Having listened to his comments in the presser, and looking back, yes you can see he looked lost for a fair bit of this game, then towards the end the determined, focused look returned to his eyes. Whether whatever he was eating gave him a boost, it was certainly a timely focus to clinch victory!

I guess the match would be around 5pm - 5-30pm .... depends how long the previous one goes on for. :)

@Wendy , I was talking about lead tapes which you can add to your racquet to increase its weight and some pop in your shots. Just read a very informative article on customizing the weight of racquet. Heres the link
http://www.tennis-wa.../customize.html

The match between tsonga and berdych will start just now. Federers match will follow.

@ vibhu : thank you Vibhu for all those magnificient pics. You are amazing man.

Thank you Arijeet, it must have been some other tape that he was removing then as it was definitely white ;)
