Roger Federer set up a blockbuster semi-final against Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after he recorded his 40th match win at the Aviation Club, venue of the ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tournament, on Thursday night.

Fourth seed Federer, a five-time former champion, defeated Lukas Rosol, contesting their meeting, 6-2, 6-2 in just 58 minutes. He now takes a 16-15 lead over top seed and four-time titlist Novak Djokovic into Friday’s clash. Djokovic will be attempting to register the 550th match win of his career.

Looking ahead to the semi-finals, Federer said, "We know each other very well, and we've played each other everywhere and [on] all the surfaces, you name it. I think we always play the match-up actually very good, because we play explosive, aggressive tennis, so there is always some shot-making going on. I'm looking forward to the match. One match, best of three sets on a court like this, it's a bit of ‘let's see what happens’, anyway. We both know that."

Federer bounced back from an 0-2 deficit against Rosol in the first set, which lasted 28 minutes, to lose just six points in the next six games. Federer broke Rosol to love in the third game of the second set and didn't looks back.

"When you play someone for the first time, you never quite know what his best level is or his normal level is," admitted Federer, when asked how he felt when Rosol took a 2-0 lead. "That's why you kind of keep pushing on, and that's also why I guess the score came out the way it did, because I never let go. I always kept making returns, made sure he had to work hard.

"Yesterday [against Radek Stepanek], I think I actually played okay. I just didn't serve well. Maybe [I] could argue that Radek is a better return player than Rosol is and all these things, but still I did serve much more clutch today when I needed to, which didn't work at all yesterday."

Bearing in mind that Roger Federer and the 28 year old Lukas Rosol have never played eachother before, it was going to be an interesting match, to see how Federer would assess and adapt his game to combat an unfamiliar opponent.

I was slightly nervous, to say the least, following on from the match yesterday. Rosol being another player from the Czech Republic of whom I had heard comms say has a powerful serve, and it did not start well for Roger.

He had elected to receive, which I guess gave him a bit of time to gauge the stroke play of Rosol. My heart truly dropped though when it came to Roger's service game and he got broken. Rosol had found a sweet spot on court, driving the ball to Roger's backhand to decisively take a point on several occasions.

But today there was a different, more purposeful Roger Federer on court. He showed he meant business from then on and broke straight back and then eased through the first set without too much of a struggle, winning it 6-2

In the second set he pretty much carried on where he had left off and took and early break, from then on the writing was on the wall for Rosol, and although he made some powerful winning shots, this was not enough to stop Federer taking the second set 6-2

Here's a recording of the final game with Match Point

A swift and fairly untaxing match was just what Roger needed today, as he faces a tough challenge in the Semi Final against Novak Djokovic tomorrow. Maybe slightly more so as Novak had no match today after Mikhail Youzhny withdrew prior to their Quarter Final due to injury.

Here is what Roger had to say after the match

And finally the shot of the match, where after an exciting rally, Federer chases down a lob from Rosol and drives a winning forehand down the line

ATP Hot Shot video

In that video you can hear the sound of Rosol tapping his racquet head on the ground as Federer prepares to serve. He did this a lot and I am surprised he was allowed to do so as it could have been regarded as an unnecessary distraction for the opposing player.

Thanks Sausan and Wendy for the pics, recaps, etc.  It was good to see Roger get this one over with quickly and conserve a little energy for today.  Time to start getting nervous now!

I've got tickets for the April Davis Cup tie :)   Tickets went on sale at 8.30 this morning. I had to go for a blood test early this morning and by the time I was able to get online (at about 9.30 am) all the premium seats had gone.  I'm in row 23 though, towards the middle, so not too bad.

Great win today over Djokovic!

The manner in which he did it, could be vital to his confidence for the ret fo the season

He needs to go on and win it now .

Hello Rita.

I am Sudhanshu. I am also a huge fan of Roger and have been following him for the past 10 years.

Luckily i had an opportunity to work for Swisscom in Bern for the past two years and i have seen Roger Play in Swiss Indoors in basel for the past two years.

Its a Religious Experience.

I just wanted to ask you whether you got Friday tickets or the three day pass.

Currently on the Swiss Davis Cup website, i can see only Friday Tickets available.

Vielen Dank for the response.

Gruss,

Sudhanshu

Hi Sudhanshu.  I got a 3-day pass for 269 francs.  I didn't know you could buy tickets for just one day.  They said the 3-day passes were the only possibility available, and that individual day tickets might be bought closer to the date - if there were any left.  Are you sure it's not a 3-day pass you're looking at?  The prices are 386 francs for premium seats (they were all gone by the time I got online), 269 francs for category 1 (this is what I bought but there weren't all that many left), 229 francs for category 2, and 174 francs for category 3.

Hope this info helps

Rita

Hello Rita.
Thanks for the info.
I had checked and indeed it was 3 days pass. I received the invoice today.
I am so excited about it...
