Roger Federer earned a first win over Novak Djokovic since 2012 to reach the Dubai Tennis Championships final.

1517426_687226847990329_1070643544_n.jpg

The Swiss world number eight, 32, took advantage of a rain delay to fight back and claim an impressive 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory in one hour and 45 minutes.

It was a first win over the Serb in four attempts and denied the world number two the chance to level their overall head-to-head record at 16-16.

He will meet Tomas Berdych, who beat Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the final.
It gives Czech Berdych, who claimed a 7-5 7-5 victory, a chance to make amends for his defeat in last year's final to Djokovic.

Federer admitted he feared the worst again at the start, but recovered well by adopting a more aggressive policy.

"I think I was able to play a bit more aggressively as the match went on,"said Federer."I knew I was in a bit of trouble (after the first set) and not looking good at all, because he has a tendency to really run with it and play more freely on your serveHe plays very dangerous.
"It was just a matter of trying to play consistent but remain aggressive - sometimes being overly aggressive to see if it works. If it doesn't, then you can always pull back a little bit. Clearly it was close, but I think I got the right balance, just the right balance."

"Then I started to serve very well, something I haven't been able to do really this week yet. I knew to have a chance (against Djokovic), I needed to serve well, so I'm just very happy I was able to deliver that."

World number two Djokovic won the opening set in convincing fashion but, after a weather-enforced break, 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer broke in the sixth game of the second set to force a decider.

Federer immediately broke his opponent in the third set and eventually consolidated his break after saving two break points.

A further break moved him 4-1 ahead and he closed out the match to end Djokovic's hopes of a first ATP Tour title in 2014.
It was a first win over Djokovic for Federer since beating him in the final of the Cincinnati Open in August 2012.

It is the first time that Federer has lost the first set against Djokovic and rallied to win.

And Djokovic said after the match: “He deserved to win. He played better in the second part of the match and was more aggressive and played all around the court really well. I dropped the opening game of the third set; it was quite a bad service game for me. I started making a lot of unforced errors in the second part of the second set and just wasn't managing to move as well. He felt that this is his opportunity, and he used it. That's why he's a big champion.

“It's like any other match against Roger,” continued the Serb. “It's always tense. It always goes down the wire. Even though I was the better player and I felt I was in control for the first hour or so, it appears that it wasn’t enough, because a few points can really decide the winner. That's what happened. He mentally felt more comfortable, was coming to the net. On the other side, I backed up, and that resulted with the loss.”

What a thrilling match!!

It was always going to be a tough contest with two players of the calibre of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. I was a bit concerned for Roger as he had a match yesterday, whereas Djokovic had not, following Youzhny's withdrawal, and would probably feel fresher as a result.

Here's a Video of the walk on and warm up

Djokovic won the toss and elected to serve. Right from the start both players put everything into their game and as early as the third point of the match a thrilling rally had the crowd gasping and cheering excitedly. Sadly Roger lost this one with a long shot. Then, following the pattern of previous matches, he was broken in his first service game and never managed to make up that deficit.

But although Roger lost the first set, (3-6) he had played some stunning tennis in his effort to win points, as this video of a 26 shot rally in the final game of that set shows.

The second set started with Federer taking a "love" service game to quickly get on the score board. Fans were treated to some awesome tennis from both players, which left me breathless at times.

Of all things play was interrupted for a short while by a rain delay. When it resumed Federer broke to lead 4-2, my cheers of sheer delight sent my dog hurtling in circuits around the settee! :D

In the final set Federer really had the bit between his teeth, he broke Djokovic in the first game. Aces were flying off his racquet, in fact the accuracy of his serve improved markedly, from 50% in the second set to 74% in the third and the match was then within his grasp. The atmosphere around the court was electric ... not to mention in my sitting room, amongst many others around the world no doubt!

Here is what Roger had to say after the match

ATP Video

[b]Not only did Roger think through to overcome his problems in recent matches, he's played an increasingly aggressive and tactical game, and I truly feel that the larger racquet has given him that bit more power and that is beginning to show to his advantage now.

Well if you ask me I think this win was all down to the outfit. Much, much better than the pyjamas and wishy-washy shirt  :)

Seriously, what a wonderful display of excellent tennis from both men that was!  Pure joy to watch. Thank you Wendy and Sausan, as always, for the amazing pics, videos, and summaries.  And Tennis Player, I hope you have had a good rest now and are ready for today's offering.  At least it's the weekend :)

I'm hoping today for a match that starts on time and isn't over-long, as I have to go out at around 5.30 (4.30 UK time).  Hoping for a Roger victory, obviously, but whatever happens today I'm sure yesterday's match, following on from the wins over Tsonga and Murray at the AO, will have given Roger a huge, huge boost of confidence going forward this year.
