Thanks for predictions and draw results. The trickiest match would be Novak vs Federer. Very exciting to watch. Is it only myself who thinks that the first clay of the season at MC is not looked upon with great enthusiasm by tennis fans? Hope Roger wins. As usual fingers crossed

So Roger has the prospect of facing Novac Djokovic in the semi final and then possibly Rafael Nadal for a sizzling final. Fingers crossed for Roger this time around.

Must admit that I'm always a bit nervous watching matches on clay with players sliding across court in a spray of red dust, can so easily visualise a twisted ankle, there again that could happen on any surface couldn't it. The main hope is that Roger doesn't get injured, but he must feel fit and eager to play to decide to take up a Wild Card for Monte Carlo.

He tweeted yesterday .... Back on my beloved clay, that's where it all started for me! #grind #dirtysocks

Together with this photo, a sort of "selfie" .... suppose you could call it a "footsie" ;)

1505245_689947554398412_5415860490314556

When asked if he was sure he loved it he replied .... Very sure! The press thinks I don't like it. Actually I love it

Let's hope that this serves as an excellent start to his clay season with some good matches, improving serve stats and declining unforced error count. A trophy at the end of it would be a bonus of course!

I'm reading that Gasquet has withdrawn.   Looking forward to seeing how Roger copes on this surface with his new-found energy and new raquet.  As you say, Wendy, he sounds enthusiastic, but then when doesn't he.

There was absolute confusion all around as the initial draw (with Richard Gasquet in it) was announced at about 12:35 pm local time. But, the announcement that Richard Gasquet has withdrawn because of a back injury came at about 12:48 pm.

As per ATP rules, if a seeded player withdraws before the start of 1st Round matches, then, the draw has to be re-done... So, therefore, the draw was re-done, though, the seedings of players remained the same.

Tsonga inspite of remaining the #9 seed actually got a 1st round bye. The updated draw has been posted above.

For the initial draw, feel free to see my twitter feed....

Harsha asked me a very good question & I am sharing it here (for our reader's knowledge) :

At Indian Wells & Miami 2014 : Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew after the initial draw, why wasn't the draw re-done?

The answer as I explained above,  Del Potro's withdrawal came after 1st round matches had started, so, that's why, the draw wasn't re-done....

Had Del potro withdrawn before the start of 1st Round matches (by 1st round matches, I mean the 1st official main draw match of the tournament here, involving any player), the draw would have been re-done there also...

Thanks Vibhu. Hadn't read your projections properly so didn't notice you'd already taken Gasquet out.  You are ahead of us all as always :)

Amazingly, even ATP didn't care to report this news about Gasquet withdrawing & how it changed the draw. ATP will be well served if it had editors like you. The quality of your match reports, ranking explanation & what ever you explain with precision is always better than what I read on ATP or for that matter, any Tennis site.

I do have a question, what was the initial draw like & how it changed after Gasquet withdrew?

Thanks

Dogopolov v Gulbis is the best match of rd 1. Anderson v Monfils is another good one. Roger has a good draw this time. Should go all the way to SF without much trouble. Then we'll see what happens.
