17 grand slam titles, 21 masters titles, 6 world tour finals title, 302 weeks at world no 1, out of which 237 are continuous...... 20 years from now a young man reading the career statistics of Roger Federer (which would even read more emphatic by then) would say " This man must be the greatest player ever". I am afraid young man you have no idea about the greatness of Roger if you havent seen him play and judge him only by his career statistics.

Numbers are just numbers it cant measure what roger federer brings to the game. He brings magic, sheer joy, a moment of brilliance that you havent witnessed before. The more you watch him play the more you get amazed and hypnotized by this mans skills. Not just when he plays a live game even when he practices , even when he hits a ball precisely to a ballboy so nonchalently or even when he bounces the ball on his raquet you get dumbfounded by this mans ability. Personally for me , when i am sad or worried or not having a good day i watch federers videos in youtube. It gives me joy , brings a smile on my face, refreshes my mind to gear up and face the situation. I am sure that most of you also feel the same.

I am writing this because I was sad about some of the negative comments made by some of the so called fans in Rogers official website after his recent loss in the monte carlo masters. They dont realize winning is not everything. Yes numbers are important but there is something beyond just numbers. I didnt feel the urge to respond to those comments until i found this video on youtube by Milos petric. This video, with the clippings and the background song perhaps most appropriately describe what Roger brings to the game of tennis. The link is given below. I think every one who loves tennis must watch this video.

In the end i would say thank you god for letting me born in an era when you yourself played tennis.

So true Arijeet. I rarely visit the Forum on Roger's site and one of the reasons is as you describe. Some people quickly forget what he has achieved and seem to expect him to be superhuman, keeping up that level year after year. All the top players have peaks and troughs. None can achieve perfection constantly. The fact that Roger has achieved what he has is pretty amazing and I will remain proud to call myself a fan as long as he enjoys stepping onto the court.

We are indeed lucky to live in such a thrilling era in the game of tennis. It will not be the same once he does retire. No other player has that certain something that makes Roger Federer special :)

Novak Djokovic has announced that he is pulling out of Madrid as the injury to his right wrist has flared up again.

Will this mean that the whole draw has to be done again, or just some strategic repositioning of the top seeds?

Novak hopes to be fit in time for Rome, but to be honest I fear that he will not be giving his wrist enough time to heal properly when you consider the punishment that joint gets in the power of the baseline game today.
