With this match falling on the evening before Roger's 33'rd birthday, hopes were high that victory would be sweet for him tonight.

Things were looking good in the first set, Roger covered the court very well, his movement was fluid and athletic, he was winning 93% of his first service points, compared to Marin Cilic's 76%, but this was not to be an easy match by any means.  Federer was serving second in this set, which means he was playing catch up and things proved to be very tight, very close and taken to the wire in a tie break, which was also neck and neck.  Federer had a mini break at 5-4 but then lost serve to give 6-5 but then with some super shots close to the baseline he managed to clinch the first set 7-5 when Marin Cilic's return went long.

The real drama of the match came in the second set when Roger was leading 5-4 and had 6 match point opportunities against Cilic's serve, in a tense game lasting 18 minutes 46 seconds with a total of 12 Deuce points!

Unfortunately for Roger and his fans he was not able to capitalise on this and the second set went on to a tie break, which Cilic won more comfortably.

The comms then "kindly" reminded us that earlier in the day two of the top seeds, Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka had been knocked out and speculated that Roger Federer could well be the third.

Tension mounted, no doubt for Roger as well.  Marin Cilic was again serving first in the third set and Federer faced an early break point in his first service game, but managed to save that and continue to run this as an extremely close match, until at last there was the first break of serve in the whole match so far and it fell to Roger Federer to finally break Cilic's serve with a beautiful shot down the line, taking the score to 5-4 and leaving him the chance to serve for the match.

Which he did in spectacular style, with 2 aces down the T as an appetizer!
