Roger Federer saved 4 match points as he defeated Stan Wawrinka 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7) in a nerve jangling match that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes to set up a final clash vs Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

Some decent quality highlights here, we'll see how long it will take before ATP inquisitors will take it down...

On the other note, it seemed like Roger might have a slight problem with his back as he was preparing to receive the final point of the match. Anybody else has noticed that? Hope he'll be ok for tomorrow.

Roger's post match press conference

Stuart Appleby, who posted the photo above, said that this press conference was at 1am!! Good grief, I hope Roger is allowed to get some rest before the Final tomorrow!

This was going to be a tough match at the best of times with two good friends facing each other over the net for the chance to play in the ATP World Tour Finals. I felt Stan Wawrinka's form was improving match by match and Roger had been so sublime against Murray in his previous match, could he build up the adrenaline again and be on top form tonight?

It was a grind out there for Roger for sure. Stan was playing extremely well and managed to break Roger early in the first set. Despite the effort I felt Roger was a bit flat in that set and sadly for his fans he was unable to break back despite a valiant effort.

Roger's game seemed sharper in the second set, and Stan kept up the pressure. This was turning out to be a real battle out there, the tension here on the sofa was almost unbearable at times! This was turning into the best match of the Final Showdown so far as being a more equally balanced contest between the two men. Roger hung in there and won the second set. This one was going to the wire!

Now I cannot remember exactly when, but there were two occasions where the chair umpire, C├ędric Mourier, made the wrong line call. In the first instance he overruled a line judge to call a ball in, when it was clearly out. Roger had seen it was out and assumed he had won the point, taking a 15 love lead in the game and this lead to a short discussion once Roger realised the score was not as he expected.

It was surprising as Hawkeye showed Stan's serve to be way adrift of the line by at least an inch! The second instance a shot Roger played cross court hit the line, but was declared out by Mourier! This raised more comment by the comms than on court as maybe Roger had not seen it clearly. I was shocked to put it mildly that a chair umpire would do this and not call for confirmation on Hawkeye, these could have been crucial points for Roger.

The tension didn't let up in the third set, in fact it grew! Roger facing, and saving four match points! Eventually winning after a very close tie break. Talk about exhausted! Goodness knows how Stan and Roger felt. A good win for Roger though, it shows he still has the will to battle through against adversity. A tough loss for Stan.

The final against Djokovic will be another stern test for Roger. Not only because Novak is on form, but also as he will be relatively fresh compared to Roger after having such a gruelling match just the previous evening. I do wonder whether it would be fairer for the players to have a day of rest between the semis and the final. All in all it's an exhausting schedule!

Can't say I noticed that. I felt as if he was really keyed up waiting to receive. Hope not anyway, that would be a disaster :(

So sad to discover that you were right! Well spotted. Goodness a problem with his back is the last thing he needs, sincerely hope that it can be sorted.

A courageous decision. The right decision. Roger's health is the most important, let's hope this back situation is temporary as it must be a real worry for him and not trivial for him to withdraw from a final like this.

I join all Federer Fans in wishing Roger well and a speedy return to full fitness. We will miss him, but would not want him to play for the sake of it and aggrevate the situation.
