Roger Federer began the defence of his Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title on Monday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mikhail Youzhny in the first round.

Federer fired eight aces against Youzhny in the 56-minute win, taking him to a career ace count of 8,985. Federer is just 15 aces away from joining the likes of Goran Ivanisevic, Ivo Karlovic and Andy Roddick as the only players to reach the 9,000 aces milestone (since ATP started recording aces post 1990).

The Swiss improved to a 16-0 mark against Youzhny in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series as he won his first match back since suffering a surprise third-round exit against Andreas Seppi at the Australian Open last month.

"I think it was close in that first set." said Federer. "I think we were both trying to find our range. I'm happy I didn't start to play too careful after it, because it is tough to play here in Dubai with the quick conditions. After that, I think I started to return much better. Serve got a bit more consistent. My half volleys were getting better. I was able to get the set and the break, and then that's when you can bring it home."

Federer improved to a 7-1 match record in 2014.

The 33-year-old Federer has a 43-5 match record at this ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tournament, lifting the trophy in 2003-05, 2007, 2012 and 2014. He also finished runner-up in 2006 and 2011.

This is the 11th time in his 12th appearance in Dubai, when he's reached the 2nd Round.

This was Roger Federer's 105th match win in less than an hour (total wins till date: 1003)

Highest active winning streaks of the ATP open era :

Lendl vs Mayotte: 17-0

Lendl vs Davis: 16-0

Lendl vs Gilbert: 16-0

Federer vs Ferrer: 16-0

Federer vs Youzhny: 16*-0

David Ferrer vs Almagro : 15-0

Federer vs Nieminen: 14-0

Jimmy Connors vs Gottfried: 13-0

Out of the Top 8 ATP (active winning streaks in the open era vs opponents) : Roger Federer now features in three, Ivan Lendl in three, David Ferrer and Jimmy Connors in one each.

Federer will face the winner of an all-Spanish clash between Fernando Verdasco and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the 2nd Round on Wednesday.

it was a cool and breezy night in Dubai and the court seemed rather dark, even with the brilliance turned up on my screen. This was a strange sort of match. The usual tension was not there, on the sofa here or, it appeared, on court. Roger seemed very laid back, almost casual at times and took a while to settle back in to the rhythm of play. Understandable really, as he had been away from the game since his early exit from the Australian Open a month ago.

In the end this turned out to be a comfortable win for Roger, who was not really stretched by Mikhail Youznhy, who seemed to fade away as the match progressed.

All in all a gentle return to the courts for our maestro, who plays doubles tomorrow, which will hopefully help him key into the swing of things ready to face his next challenge in the singles.

I note that Richard Gasquet defeated Andreas Seppi today, (6-4 6-7(1) 6-4) so Roger does not have the prospect of facing him again just yet ;)
