Second seed Roger Federer required just 55 minutes to cruise past Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-1 on Wednesday for a place in the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters third round.

Federer hit 19 winners to five for Chardy, and made 12 unforced errors to record his 17th victory in 19 matches this year, which includes two ATP World Tour titles.

Federer, who lost to Chardy at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia last year, was competing for the first time since 22 March.

The four-time finalist will next face No. 14 seed Gael Monfils or Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Monte-Carlo is one of two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles missing from Federer's collection (along with Rome)

That was an ideal start to Roger's campaign for Monte Carlo 2015. He was certainly looking very fit, serving well, moving fluently around the court and making some impressive shots.

Let's hope that the extra training he has put in will stand him in good stead for what could be a tough path through to the trophy. The match against Gael Monfils tomorrow promises to be a much more edge of the seat affair for Federer fans and I for one am getting a bit tense already, though I expect Roger and his team are quietly working out the best strategy. The main thing is that he enjoys playing, he has prepared well and that is very important. Now all we can do is wish him the very best of luck!

It is so frustrating that the ATP are so slow to post official videos which are publicly available, that's if they do  and yet so quick to take down those posted by others. In my opinion they are missing a golden opportunity to fuel the enthusiasm of existing fans and fire an interest in the sport of tennis in potential fans around the globe. Tennis as a sport is the loser in the long run :(
