After a very constructive week in Istanbul, where he faced some tough matches against clay court specialists Roger Federer has arrived in Madrid and was soon hard at work on the practice courts, where one lucky fan, @Lodema57, presented him with "the red envelope" :) I am intrigued to know what is in it and guess good luck messages from many fans ....?

Roger still has the tape on his right index finger. He had that taped for the final in Istanbul. Hopefully something that is under control and not going to impact on the ease by which he can hold and control his racquet here in Madrid.

It looks like Roger is enjoying himself out there. Let's hope he does not have the sort of edge of the seat, nail biter of "fun" matches here in Madrid, as he did in Istanbul, though with a challenging draw ahead of him, I somehow feel a bit more of my hair will be going white in the next few days. It did amuse me to hear Roger call those close matches "fun". As a fan I would beg to differ on that emotion ;)

Here is is pre tournament interview.

Best of luck Roger, hope you have a good win today, specially as its Leo and Lenny's birthday :) :) Though it's going to be a tough one I fear, against the young Australian, Nick Kyrgios, who defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the previous round. Fingers crossed ....

Unfortunately I do not know who took the photos in this post. If it was you, or you know who did, let me know and credit will be given

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a Roger Federer to smile.

Thanks Kishore :)

Sadly it was not to be for Roger in Madrid this year. Though it was not for the want of trying.

After a very closely contested match Nick Kyrgios won the nail biting tie break in the third set :(

I am still struggling to come to terms with this loss, but maybe the quick turn around from Istanbul combined with media and brand commitments took its toll. He just did not have enough time to settle, adjust to the altitude and prepare on the practice courts. All these things take longer as each year passes by .... For me Madrid is all rather empty now without Roger :(

In an interview before he played his first match Roger believes Rafa to be the favourite to win Madrid ....

Now we have to wait and see whether he decides to play Rome .....

Over the last 1-2 years, I have appreciated Wendy_RedRobin's, Sausan's, and Vibhuism's match reports and updates.  It is a shame that this site seems to be defunct.  Fed is playing great tennis.  I hope that the moderators can resume here.  You are missed.

Thank you for your kind words STLHawk, appreciated more than you know.

It may not look it, but it takes a lot of time and effort to keep things ticking over and unfortunately various personal issues have made that level of dedication difficult for the main contributors at the moment.
