Roger Federer dropped a set before earning his record-breaking 234th Grand Slam match victory to reach the French Open's third round.

Federer eliminated 92nd-ranked Adrian Ungur of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 Wednesday to break a tie with Jimmy Connors for most career wins at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968.

Here's a rare screen grab taken after Roger Federer 234th slam match win in the 2nd Round of French Open, 2012.

After todays victory, The 16-time Grand Slam champion is now 234-35 in tennis' top four tournaments, an 87% winning percentage.

This is the match statistics of today's match :::

Here are the highlights from the match ------------

As you can see from these statistics, Roger's performance today was much much better than the first round match, where he had a completely off day.

How ever, as was evident, these are the 2 things that Roger needs to work on to have any realistic chance of beating Novak Djokovic & Rafael Nadal in the scheduled semis & final of French Open, 2012.

i) Roger seems to be missing a lot of opportunities especially on the running forehand. Out of these 40 unforced errors that you can see in the chart above, more than 18 were on the forehand. As every one in the Tennis world knows that, for Roger to do well, his forehand & service have to be spot on.

ii) Also, Roger needs to approach the net a bit more often, thou, Roger no doubt has one of the best volleys in the game, but, it seems, he is not 100% confident when it comes to volleying twice or thrice in a point.

I say this because this year, balls are lighter than previous year and for an aggressive short maker like Roger, he needs to ensure that his main USP : The powerful forehand & his serve gets him as much free & cheap points as possible.

Still, as a keen follower of the game, if you ask me, if in 1st Round game, Roger's game was only 20% of his overall efficiency, this 2nd round match was 60% of his overall game.

Hope, he can better that in the coming games.

nice article...three more things that i want to add :

i) Federer some times looks too hasty. In the sense, he wants to finish every thing asap. If you guys noticed in the loses to Novak Djokovic on September 11th, 2011 & to Rafael Nadal in Aus open on Jan 26th, 2012, Federer after winning the first 2 sets & 1st set respectively looked a man in a hurry.

what I mean to say is that, its good to be fast, but, doing too fast can be a bit of dampener.

ii) Also, I have noticed that either Federer's game is at an unbelievable peak or he has a day full of unforced errors & missed opportunities. he doesn't have any middle game or paths.

iii) Also, Federer always has one fixed game plan in mind. every one knows that he is best in out thinking opponents.

But, some times, I believe when his game plan is not working, he should try some thing else. so, what I mean to say is that, Roger some times tend to be rigid with his game plan.

having said that, I still believe he is 1 of all time greats & how easy it is for people like me to give opinions from here rather than actually implement what I am typing here on the court.

nice article and nice pics

I agree with you to all the points you mentioned
I hope from Federer improve his performance
Do not know but I see him he's playing listlessly -_-

When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a Roger Federer to smile.

Thanks Kishore :)
