Most Important : Please be informed that I am writing this post about 12 hours prior to the start of French Open, 2012 (will keep updating latest info in the follow up comments, so keep reading).
Here is how, the ranking points looked like of the top eight players immediately before the start of French Open, 2012 :::

Since, Novak Djokovic was a losing semi-finalist of 2011 French Open, so, he stands to lose 720 points from his 2011 points & gain the points that he will garner during French Open, 2012.
So, here are the different scenarios :
i) If Novak Djokovic loses the Semi-final of French Open, 2012,
then he loses 720 points of 2011 & gains 720 points of 2012.
so, net net, no gain or loss.
ii) If Novak Djokovic loses in the Finals of French Open, 2012,
then he will have a net gain of 480 points (1200 added by virtue of being a finalist in 2012 & 720 deducted from 2011)
iii) If Novak Djokovic wins the Final of French Open, 2012 --
then he will have a net gain of 1280 points (2000 added by virtue of being a finalist in 2012 & 720 deducted from 2011).
I really got to say, if Novak Djokovic wins the French Open 2012, then in my books, 99.999% chances are that Novak will end 2012 as the number 1.
Even, Roger Federer said this in an interview in April that if Novak Djokovic wins the French Open, 2012, it will be very-2 tough for Roger Federer to regain no.1 ATP ranking from Djokovic.
