The Champion. The Hunted. Food for thought.

RF.jpg

They exclaimed, “He is finished!

They jeered, “He can never do it. Ever!

And so... They began writing his sporting obituary.

Each time his doubters had something to throw at him, he remained unfazed and inimitably so. He wasn’t playing for them. Why would he? It wasn’t the prospect of gaining a permanent residence‐ship at the Valhalla of Immortals, either. There was only one person he was responsible to – his own self. He may not have been considered as the present day number one, yet he was hunted. All because he seemed to fail in front our eyes. Damn the surreal expectations of us mere mortals! Statistics have a story to say, too. And so it was to be – the die had been cast; the bar, raised.

In sport, there is a “numero uno” and then there is everyone else. Any individual who has occupied the numero uno slot for a long time running will find it rather unfamiliar when he is deposed and relegated to being part of “the rest”. To scale a peak is one thing, but to scale, reside and rule for years together is quite another.

Agreed ‐ by law ‐ that the hunter is often better positioned than the hunted. But sport is a different habitat altogether. Being hunted year‐in, year‐out and yet never slipping off the pedestal creates a divine aura. One that shields you from the brouhaha of vagrant onlookers. It is when you are back as the hunter that you try and grope for all the faculty that had propelled you to become the hunted in the first place! Weird. Period.

Weathering a storm is quite an arduous task but repeatedly thwarting tireless attacks from the nether hordes? All that, evidently so, differentiates a contender from a pretender. The certified, graceful champion and a redoubtable, gritty challenger.

Coming back to the man of our moment – he reminds us how a true champion should be. The quintessential embodiment of talent sublime, grace non‐pareil, humility profound and probably the faintest of faint streak of arrogance – to put the opposition in their place. He may be Master to many an aspiring [yet greenhorn] apprentice, but he is forever an ardent student of the game who cherishes every moment of battle. One who understands that possessing a supposedly complete repertoire is equivalent to owning a drop that makes the mighty ocean. After all, it was Sir Isaac Newton himself who spake thus – “I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

No one would sound even remotely unctuous when the name “Roger Federer” pops‐up to fit, nay, complete that earlier statement.

in deed, a great write-up & how important this 7th Wimbledon will be. If you ask me, I have no doubts, this 7th wimb is more important than even his 1st wimbledon :).

VK Batra:

It truly is special. All his Grand Slams are special, if you ask me. But in terms of importance - this one is up there, purely because - at least temporarily - it will keep his critics at bay...

Sad fact though, all that is needed is a loss to Djokovic/Nadal or for one of them to win another Major... And the doubts will resurface. The media has such a short-term memory!!!

Coming to think of it... The media has such a short-term memory.

Trust me.

All the press will need to start talking about his decline is for one of the following to happen:
» A loss to someone he doesn't normally lose to. They will say - Age is catching up...
» A loss to Djokovic/Nadal/big hitter. They will say - Can he beat them any more? Will his legs sustain?
» A ranking dip. They will say - He has lost the edge...
» An early loss (before the semi-final, in Federer terminology). They will say - This will hurt his confidence. The decline is showing.
» Loss in a semi-final. They will say - He can't seem to reach the final!
» Loss in a final. They will say - He is losing matches he ought to win. He has lost it!
» Victory in a Master's. They will say - Only the majors count. X & Y have contested in four of the last five major finals.

Ah well... There will be a group of true tennis fans who will be laughing when the reporters write all that. Heh heh heh...

yes, u are right. Media guys get paid so they have to add spice to make the news entertaining & spicey :)..

That's why, after 2 and a half years of such consistent buzz, Roger Federer won his 17th grand slam & that's why, this 7th wimbledon is special for him :).

Of course the press will say all these things, because this is the nature of the press otherwise, how they will work?!
I hate this thing from the press  .......When the athlete makes a mistake or losing a match the press, do not stop talking about it, and destroy him even if he still a youth
Sure it's only happens to the great stars.

VK Batra:

Absolutely. Coming to think of it... It is such a shame.

Although I am equally appreciative of Novak's 2011 & Rafa's2010, the media somehow managed to completely overlook the fact that Roger did it thrice (2004 and back-to-back 2006-07)!

Furthermore, if we look at the primordial what-ifs or what-could-have-beens, there's another stat:

» The year in between that stretch - when he did not win 3 Slams - in 2005, he more than made up for it with an eye-popping year end stat. 81-4.
» He had another chance in 2009 (acknowledging the fact that he was stricken down with mono, that sapped him in 2008), by making all 4 finals.
...
...
...
» Most impressive, to me... He made 18/19 finals between Wimbledon 2005 & Australian 2010 (both included). Had he NOT lost to Novak at the Australian 2008, he would have made a ridiculous 19 straight finals.

It's ridiculous how short-sighted the media becomes... Knowing that he is at least 5 years older to his chief present-day competitors.

Sausan:

Sad, yet true...

Check my response above - for a handful (of what I am sure is aplenty!) of blatant facts which the media blissfully forget whilst writing him off after every loss.

Remember when he lost to Roddick this year? All the hue and cry they made out of it? Wow...

Ah well... As long as he plays - not sure when we'll have the next Federer. Can almost certainly say we won't see one in our lifetime!
