Other than the fact he's the biggest winner that tennis has ever seen, and possibly the greatest player to have ever competed professionally, Roger Federer is loved by fans the world over. Not everyone understands the love affair with him though, merely glancing up the rates & odds placed on him occasionally from the latest Tennis match when he's mentioned.
For those who are sceptical though, I love Roger Federer because...
- He's bettered Pete Sampras' legendary Wimbledon record. Roger just won his seventh Grand Slam title in the tournament in 2012, meaning he and Sampras are tied in the ATP No. 1 position for Men's Singles.
- Roger has more Men's Singles Grand Slam titles than any other tennis player, with a whopping 17. He is even ahead of the master, Bjorn Borg.
- He didn't have a coach for 8 long years. You will very often see a tennis player's coach sat in the stands watching, ready to fix whatever issues they have. Not Roger. His talent is natural, and he has such an uncanny feel for the game, that an instructor would be useless for him.
- In terms of endurance, you might notice that Roger Federer's game tends to get better as he goes along. The opponent might win the first set, but that doesn't mean they can relax. He comes back stronger. Take Andy Murray's recent defeat in the Wimbledon final. He won the first set, but Federer overpowered him in the end.
- It doesn't matter if he's playing on clay, grass or a hard surface, Federer is skilled on all three. Although clay is thought to be his weakest one. He's won several tournaments on grass and hard surfaces, while the clay at the French Open gives him some difficulty. He has won once though.
- He's classy all around. He's humble when he wins and accepts defeat with grace.
