In the morning, if some one had told Roger Federer that he's gonna bagel Novak Djokovic in one of the sets at today's final, I reckon, Federer would have given this expression.

or may be, this :P

fed smilingggggg.jpg

Rather, this is how Federer actually celebrated bagelling Novak Djokovic in the first set.

1st set.jpg

If this facial expression after winning the first set 6-0 is any proof on how serious, determined Federer was from 1st point till the last point, then this half smile from Federer after winning the Cincinnati Open for a record breaking 5th time is the biggest proof that he is hungry for more & an alarm bell for all his opponents.

Will be posting more details & the complete analysis of the match in the next 30 minutes or so. Keep watching this thread :).

When, I was writing this Cincy Masters preview in the morning, I had mentioned that the first set & starting will be very crucial for both players.

But, never had I imagined in the wildest dreams that Roger Federer will have such a dream start. For all of you who missed the first set, here's a very-2 quick highlights package ::::::::::

Also, as Roger Federer said in his post match presser, that he too was hoping for a good start, but, obviously, not such a memorable start. Here's what Roger Federer had to say on the start that he got in the first set ------------

Neither of them had dropped their serves right through out the Cincinnati Open, 2012, but, Federer put an end to that right away.

Helped by a double-fault, Federer broke Djokovic's serve to start the match. Then, aided by two more double-faults, he broke him again to go up 3-0.

Djokovic went to his chair at the break and grabbed a different racket, hoping to change the flow of the match.

It made no difference whatsoever. Federer served back-to-back aces that Djokovic couldn't touch with that new racket.

It was domination all around - Djokovic had 10 unforced errors in the opening set, the same number of points he won. The Serb had four double-faults, each one setting up a break point or ending a game.

Federer won the first set in only 20 minutes, allowing Djokovic just 10 points. It was the first time in their 28 career matches that one of them took a set 6-0. For perspective, Federer hadn't beaten anybody 6-0 in a tournament final since 2007.

Both players seemed a bit stunned.

"I was hoping for a good start, but not like that,'' Federer said.

Djokovic for sure looked a bit more energetic in the second set.

The fans gave Djokovic a loud ovation when he held serve to open the second set. The Serb looked up at the crowd and smiled while sipping water.

After a forehand by Federer sailed across the baseline, Djokovic raised his arms, reared back and screamed. Now fully engaged in the match, he took the set to a tiebreaker.

Djokovic survived one match point and got one point away from taking the tiebreaker.

Federer ran off the last three points, closing it out with a forehand.

Here is the 2nd set stats

final set 2.png

As you can see, this second set was a real close one & could have gone either way, but the one big difference between these two champs was Roger Federer's ability & the clever game-plan to approach the net as often as possible.

The way, he saved the set-point by approaching the net & then finishing the point with a great over-head smash was so praise-worthy.

As our own @FedererNews tweeted & I quote her, "Roger Federer is divine when he approaches the net"

& I couldn't agree more. For me, Roger is twice as dangerous when he approaches the net :).

Here is the over-all match statistics for you all

Net points won.jpg

As I said, Federer is a 100% different player when he approaches the net & I am so glad that during Annacone's tenure, he has started approaching the net more often & results are for every one to see :).

The points that he won by volleying not only broke Djokovic's rhythm but also ensured that there was no way back for Djokovic.

Cincinnati Masters, 2012 is Roger Federer's 5th Cincinnati title.

Here's a collage of all his 5 titles at Cincinnati ----------

fiveeeeeeeeeeee.jpg

With this Cincinnati 2012 title, he now holds the following records:::

i) Federer now leads the winners circle with five Cincinnati trophies, ahead of George Lott, Bobby Riggs and Mats Wilander, who won four titles apiece.

ii) Federer also became the first winner over 30 since Andre Agassi claimed the Rookwood Cup at Cincinnati in 2004 at the age of 34.

iii) Federer equalled Nadal's record of 21 ATP 1000 Titles.

iv) This is Federer's 76th ATP Title & he is now, just one title behind McEnroe to be No. 3 in terms of overall ATP titles wins (trails from Connors 109, Lendl 94)
