On his 30th birthday, Andy Roddick announced his retirement Thursday, saying the United States Open 2012 would be his final tournament.
He said he had been considering retirement for some time.
Here is what he said in a press conference called this evening on his 30th Birthday.
“Walking off at Wimbledon, I felt like I knew,” said Roddick, who lost in the third round last month at the All England Club, where he was a three-time finalist.
Roddick is the last American man to win a Grand Slam event, winning the United States Open in 2003. But he was unable to add another major championship, mostly because of Roger Federer, who beat Roddick in four Grand Slam finals.
“I’ve never done anything halfway,” Roddick said. “I’m not sure that I can put everything into it physically and emotionally. I don’t know that I want to disrespect the game by coasting home.”
Roddick is scheduled to play Bernard Tomic of Australia in a second-round match on Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Roddick saved money in a special fund for 13 years, and now he plans to use the money to build a sports center for children in Austin, Texas.
Good luck Roddick In all your future plans
