Roger Federer became the 3rd man in the ATP Open Era to win a tournament 8 times as he overcame a stiff resistance from Andreas Seppi 7-6 (1), 6-4 in 1 hour & 42 minutes to win the Gerry Weber Open for a record 8th time.

Roger Federer is now the 3rd guy in the ATP Open Era (after Rafa Nadal - 9 Roland Garros, 8 Monte Carlo & Barcelona & Guillermo Vilas - 8 Buenos Aires titles) to win a single tournament 8 or more times.

1st Set

Seppi started from where he left in that Australian Open 3rd round match. He was very agressive and even had 2 set-points in the 10th game but the Swiss maestro saved those with two aces. Seppi's service too was top notch and he didn't face a single break point in the entire 1st set.

Federer's 1st service came to his rescue when ever he was in slight trouble. Federer was flaw-less once again in the tie-breaker. He won the Tie-breaker 7-1. This was his 6th successful at this year's Gerry Weber Open.

Overall, this was Federer's 26th successful tie-breaker (out of 35 Tie-Breaker played) since he turned 33 on August 8th, 2014.

& this was his 38th successful tie-breaker out of the total of 64 TB's that he has played in 130 finals so far.

Here are the first set stats ----

2nd Set

As these stats clearly show you, Federer wins almost 87% of the finals after winning the 1st set. Federer played a much better 2nd set. Seppi though was very competitive for the first 7 games. He saved three break points in the 8th game. But, relentless pressure from Federer & the pressure of serving to stay in the match was too much as Federer ended the match with an overhead smash to clinch his 8th title at Halle, 86th career singles title.

With this title, Halle became the tournament where in Federer has his most number of titles wins with 8 titles.

Roger Federer has won 7 times (Wimbledon and Dubai Open/ Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships).

The next in the line are Swiss Indoors, ATP World Tour Final showdown & Cincinnati Masters- which Roger Federer has won 6 times.

This will be the 4th time in Roger Federer's career when he's heading to Wimbledon (previous 3: 2003, 2004 & 2005) with at least one title win on all three surfaces. (Clay, Hard and Grass court).

2015 is now the 12th year in the last 13 years (with the exception of 2013), where in Roger Federer has won 4 or more titles

Next up is Wimbledon starting from 29th June, 2015. This will be the 2nd time in Roger Federer's career when he will be the #2 seed. The last time, he was the #2 seed (2009), he went on to win the championships.

Roger Federer recorded his career's 1023rd match win, 283rd win at a major & 63rd win at Roland Garros as he defeated Marcel Granollers 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-3 to reach the 3rd round of French Open, 2015 in 1 hour & 47 minutes.

This is the 14th time in 17 years when Roger Federer reached the Round-3 at Roland Garros.

Overall, this is the 57th time when Roger Federer has reached Round-3 at majors (grand slams) in 64 majors played till date. He is 56-1 in Round-2 of majors.

1st Set

Federer's service was on top form in the first set and he broke the Spaniard's service twice in the 1st set to comfortably win the 1st set 6-2.

2nd Set

The Spaniard gave a much tougher fight in the 2nd set. Federer lost his concentration in the 6th game and lost his service as the Spaniard got the crucial break to lead by 4-2.

It was infact the 1800th time where in Federer's service got broken in his career (in his 15320th service game).

But the Swiss maestro broke right back and it was back on service. The next 5 games went on service and it was tie-breaker. Federer comfortably won the tie-breaker 7-1.

This was Federer's 20th successful tie-breaker in the last 28 tie-breakers that he's featured in since his 33rd birthday.

3rd Set

Federer looked very animated during the 3rd set as he looked very angry on his errors and missed break-points. His service got broken in the very first game, but, how ever Federer broke back in the 4th game & from there on, it was an one sided story as Federer served out the match in the 9th game.

This is the 14th time in the last 17 years when Roger Federer has reached Round-2 at Roland Garros.

Roland Garros is Federer's 62nd successive major (overall 64th major), only Fabrice Santoro (70 slams) has played more grand slams than the 33 year old Roger Federer.

As I tweeted before the start of the match, Alejandro Fella, Feliciano Lopez and Wayne Arthur are the only left handed guys, other than Rafa Nadal to have won a set against Roger Federer at a major.

1st Set

Federer broke Falla's service in the 8th game and that one break of service was enough as Federer clinched the 1st set 6-3.

1st Set

The first eight games went on service. Federer had a very poor service game in the 9th game and lost his service at Love as Seppi got to a 5-4 lead. Federer had three break points in the very next game but Seppi managed to save those and he won the first set 6-4. This was just the 2nd set that Seppi managed to win against Roger Federer in their 11th meeting.

2nd Set

Seppi broke Federer's service in the 3rd game to get to a 2-1 lead. How ever, Federer managed to break Seppi right back on his 6th break point and it was 2-all.

The Italian once again broke Swiss maestro's service in the 9th game, but once again Federer broke the Italian right back and it was 5-all. The next two games went on serve and it was tie-breaker time.

Federer got off to a great start in the tie-breaker and lead by 4-1 & 4-2 at the first change-over.  But, Seppi won 6 points out of the last 7 points to win the tie-breaker 7-5.

Here are the 2nd SET STATS

3rd Set

Before the start of this match, Federer had been two sets down 38 times in his career (including Davis Cup 2014 fianle, majors & non-majors) & he'd managed to win 9 of those matches.

Federer broke Seppi's serve in the 3rd game and that one break was enough as Federer won the 3rd set 6-4.

4th Set

Federer had break point in the 2nd game. Seppi managed to save those & there were no breaks of service in the 4th set as the 4th set once again went to the Tie-breaker.

By the time tie-breaker started, half of the court was in shade & the other half was in sun-shine making it awkward for both players.

Federer once again got to a 3-1 lead. But, a double fault by Federer ensured that it was 3-all at the first change-over. A forehand winner by Seppi gave him first match point at 6-5. Federer decided to leave a Seppi looping backhand & it fell in & it was all over for the 4 time Australian Open champion.

Here are the match stats -----

statssssssssssss.jpg

Interestingly, Federer won a point more than Seppi, but, as they say in Tennis, its not about winning more points, its about winning the points when it matters the most. Though, Federer had more aces & winners, but his double faults & unforced errors came at the wrong time. Overall, Seppi played the match of his life and was the deserving winner.

Federer's next tournament will be Dubai Duty Free Championship in February.

This was the 17th time in his career when Federer lost two tie-breakers in one match (1st at Australian Open & 5th time at a major).

Also, Federer's today's loss means that Novak Djokovic's will continue to be the #1 ranked player for *at least* 9 more weeks (till the end of Miami).
